The company’s mission to expand into the downstream sector faces a dilemma in maintaining sustainable competitive advantage: whether to focus on developing intermediate products or risk delaying downstream investments, which could result in missing opportunities to capitalize on the momentum to strengthen its strategic position in the supply chain as the EV battery industry grows.
The purpose of this study is to analyze the feasibility of a vertical integration diversification strategy into the pCAM precursor industry at PT. XYZ. This study employs a mixed-methods approach with an explanatory sequential design in a case study. Quantitative data was collected through a questionnaire, while qualitative data was gathered through in-depth interviews; then analyzed Porter’s Three Essential Tests framework which include Industry Attractiveness, Cost of Entry, and Better-Off Test.
This study includes a competitive analysis using Porter’s five forces framework to evaluate the pressures and readiness to address challenges in the nickel-based battery raw materials industry, the cost of entry test applying Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Payback Period calculation based on company’s planned investment, as well as synergy analysis using value chain analysis to identify potential synergies between PT. XYZ’s core business and its new business.
Research findings indicate that the pCAM precursor industry is considered highly attractive, with relatively high barriers to entry, the financial viability of the investment is demonstrated by a positive NPV calculation, an IRR higher than the discount rate, and a short payback period, and potential synergies were identified, particularly in the use of existing in procurement, infrastructure, sales and marketing, and human resources. Therefore, the vertical integration diversification strategy meets Porter’s three essential tests and is worth recommending for further implementation. The implications of this study serve as a strategic guide for management in making decisions regarding business portfolio development.
