HEC-RAS has added non-Newtonian features since version 6.0 to model flows with high sediment concentrations, with several available methods. Although this variety of techniques offers adaptability in the modeling process, it frequently leads to misunderstanding among users. This research seeks to identify the non-Newtonian approaches in HEC-RAS version 6.6 that can effectively model lahar floods on Mount Merapi's slopes.

The modeling utilized a two-dimensional unsteady flow method. The Gendol River, situated on Mount Merapi's slopes, served as the subject for modeling. Various non-Newtonian approaches were evaluated, such as Bingham, O'Brien Equation (Quadratic), Herschel-Bulkley, and Clastic Grain Flow. The results were evaluated at two control points, using water level hydrographs and flow discharge as indicators.

Simulation results showed that the O'Brien Equation method produced identical results to Bingham. The Herschel-Bulkley method shows the sensitivity of the power index (nHB) parameter to discharge under certain conditions, but still produces realistic results. In contrast, the Clastic Grain Flow method shows unrealistic results. This is characterized by flow delays, small discharges, and flow not reaching the control point at certain parameter variations. Based on these results, it can be concluded that the non-Newtonian features in HEC-RAS are capable of simulating lahar floods with several notes. The Bingham and O'Brien Equation methods are suitable approaches for simulating lahar floods. The Herschel-Bulkley method can still be used. However, determining the power index (nHB) parameter requires caution because it is sensitive to the simulation results. The Clastic Grain Flow method is not recommended for lahar flood cases.
