Butterfly pea flowers (Clitoria ternatea L.) have potential as an antibacterial active ingredient in facial wash formulations. Previous studies have demonstrated the antibacterial activity of butterfly pea flower water extract in facial wash formulations against Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa, but its efficacy still needs to be improved through optimization of the glycerin solvent. This study aims to optimize the antibacterial efficacy of butterfly pea flower extract in facial wash formulations and to evaluate their physicochemical and hedonic qualities. Butterfly pea flowers were extracted using the ultrasonic-assisted maceration method with a glycerin-water solvent mixture (1:1), then formulated into facial washes at concentrations of 0% (F0); 0.5% (F1); 1% (F2); 2% (F3); and 4% (F4). Antibacterial testing was conducted using the well diffusion method and Minimum Inhibitory Concentration microdilution against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. Physical and chemical quality was evaluated through organoleptic testing, homogeneity, pH, viscosity, and foam height and stability. Hedonic testing was conducted on 10 panelists. The results showed that F0 was the minimum concentration capable of inhibiting bacterial growth, and F4 was the most optimal formula for inhibiting growth of both bacteria in the well diffusion and microdilution tests. Formula F3 already showed a significant difference compared to F0 in inhibiting P. aeruginosa. The results of the physicochemical testing of the facial wash with butterfly pea flower glycerin extract met SNI facial wash standards regarding homogeneity, pH, viscosity, foam height and stability, as well as organoleptic properties. Formula F3 was the most preferred by panelists in the hedonic test. The conclusion of this study is that formula F4 is more effective against S. aureus and P. aeruginosa. The facial wash formulas developed also meet SNI requirements and were preferred by panelists.
