Located in the western part of Yogyakarta Special Province, Kalibawang of Kulon Progo Regency has been experiencing landslides and slope movements. Landslide incidents have killed or injured a number of people, destroyed a dozen of houses, demolished hectares of agricultural land and damaged local infrastructures. Kalibawang Irrigation Channel which runs across this region has periodically suffered damages impacting its functionality. The losses due to these landslides give rise to the demand of mitigation works. Several landslide studies in this region have been done by different individuals, but only a few of them involve in landslide mapping. Realizing the importance of mapping in the decision making process of landslide mitigation, this study is carried out. This present study aims at producing landslide hazard maps for the study area. The method used in the research involves the integration of Geographic Information System (GIS) technology with 2 slope stability models, namely SINMAP and SHALSTAB. This involves the use of GIS for terrain modeling and visualization and slope stability models for delineating the extent of potentially unstable areas. The results of the study are then combined to generate landslide hazard maps. The results of the study find that most of the areas with hillslope steeper than 30o are unstable. Moreover, the comparison of the results given by the 2 models (SINMAP and SHALSTAB) reveals many common aspects. Two main regions exhibit the most critical slope stability; they are Jonggol and Kedungrong areas. Around 15% of the study areas are found as slightly to strongly unstable. Two types of rainfall are incorporated in the study. They are ranging from 0-75mm/day and 75-125mm/day. The final results of the study are satisfactory and they are thought to be acceptable for regional landslide mitigation works. Nevertheless, future modification, improvement and updating of this work are highly suggested in order to accommodate new changes either in natural or man-made process.
