This study examines grassroots innovation in sustainable waste management implemented by the “Sewarga Sejahtera” Community Self-Help Group (KSM) in Buntok Kota Urban Village, Barito Selatan Regency. The study is important because waste management in non-urban areas continues to face challenges, including limited waste collection services, low levels of waste segregation at the source, and uneven community participation. The “Sewarga Sejahtera” KSM emerged as a community-based initiative that manages waste through collection services, waste sorting, TPS3R management, customer fee-based financing, and the utilization of recyclable materials with economic value. This study aims to describe the forms and processes of grassroots innovation carried out by the KSM and to analyze the socio-cultural mechanisms that support its sustainability. The study adopts the perspectives of grassroots innovation, cultural values, community solidarity, and social networks, employing a qualitative case study approach through in-depth interviews, observation, documentation, and document analysis. The findings reveal that the “Sewarga Sejahtera” KSM represents a grassroots innovation that emerged from local needs, is managed by the community, utilizes available resources, and evolves through social learning. The innovation process involves identifying waste-related problems, establishing organizational structures, conducting experiential learning, developing social networks, implementing activities, and adapting to various challenges. The sustainability of the innovation is supported by Dayak cultural values as a moral foundation, community solidarity as the primary driver of participation, and social networks as sources of support, legitimacy, and access to resources. The study concludes that community solidarity, strengthened by local leadership and social networks, is the most decisive factor in sustaining community-based waste management innovation.
