The Artemis program aims to establish a sustainable human presence on the Moon, requiring the precise identification of landing sites that ensure operational safety while offering scientific value. This study maps suitable landing zones within the lunar mid-latitude region (60°N to 0°S) and evaluates a Geographic Information System (GIS)-based spatial processing workflow for candidate site classification. Utilizing the merged SELENE and LRO Digital Elevation Model (SLDEM2015) at a resolution of 256 pixels per degree (ppd), the methodology employs a spatial filtering approach. Morphometric parameters are extracted to isolate areas meeting safety thresholds: a slope of less than 7° and a Relative Topographic Position (RTP) of under 40, calculated via a 15x15 moving window. The Moon Crater Database is used for spatial cross-validation to prevent landing in hazardous terrain. A standard 15 x 30 km landing ellipse geometry is applied, followed by 3D terrain modeling for geomorphological evaluation.
The spatial analysis identifies and delineates seven optimal candidate landing ellipses. These sites are strategically located on stable lunar mare plains while maintaining proximity to significant topological features that offer added value for scientific exploration. This placement provides a balance between safety from large-scale topographic hazards and accessibility to study areas. The Created GIS workflow is a reliable regional screening tool, deterministically processing millions of topographic pixels to eliminate significant obstacles. This study effectively reduces the vast global search space into specific, high-priority Areas of Interest (AoI) based on high-quality topographic modeling.
