Red mud is a Bayer by-product used in the production of alumina and presents significant environmental risks due to its highly alkaline nature (pH ±12.38) and the presence of heavy metals such as Fe and Al, which may contaminate the soil and reduce its productivity. Conventional methods of treating red mud, including washing and hydrometallurgical processes, may create secondary liquid waste which may potentially cause further pollution of the environment. The study therefore examined the use of phytoextraction as a more environmentally friendly alternative. In addition to improving the quality of red mud, the resulting biomass has the potential to be used as a refused derived fuel (RDF), and can provide economic value by recovering rare earth elements. benefits from the extraction of rare earth elements (REE).  The study used Acacia mangium grown in red mud treated with different doses of phosphoric acid (2.41, 2.70, 3.40, 4.10 and 4.39 ml per pot) and humic acid (3.59, 4.00, 5.00, 6.00, and 6.41 ml per pot). After 65 days of cultivation, the quality of red mud improved significantly, as shown by a decrease in pH to 6.6 – 6.9 and an increase in the organic carbon content to 0.1327 – 0.2816 g/g red mud. The addition of both acids also increased vegetative growth, leading to a final height of about 14 to 18 cm compared to 13.5 cm in the control treatment and increased biomass production (1.46 – 3.17 g/g plant). Plant growth over a period of 65 days has been successfully described using a kinetic first order model, yielding growth constants of 0.0569 – 0.0725 days?1. The ICP analysis showed that Fe and Al were predominantly deposited in the roots rather than on the stems and leaves of the plants, with a maximum concentration of 7,456.76 mg/kg and 3,903.43 mg/kg plant, respectively. In the meantime, the highest concentration of cerium (Ce), which is the REE was 2.818 mg/kg plant. Optimization using Response Surface Method (RSM) identified the optimal combination of 3.26 ml of phosphoric acid and 4.9 g of humic acid per pot as the treatment. These findings show that the combined use of phosphoric acid and humic acid effectively improves the quality of red mud, increases the growth and biomass production of acacia mangium and encourages the phytoextraction of heavy metals and residues from red mud.
