This study compares the perspectives of Michael D. Gordin and Sven Ove Hansson in order to address the demarcation problem in the philosophy of science. Gordin views pseudoscience as a sociological phenomenon and categorizes it into four pragmatic types, but his approach is considered to lack an epistemic foundation for assessing the validity of claims. On the other hand, Hansson, with his criteria, argues that the assessment of pseudoscience has its own normative epistemic basis, not merely dealing with sociological and historical phenomena. This research attempts to compare Gordin’s categorization using Hansson’s framework, which emphasizes the criteria of severe unreliability and the presence of deviant doctrines.

This research is a qualitative-descriptive study within the framework of comparative philosophical research, aiming to investigate the demarcation problem between science and pseudoscience using the philosophy of science as an analytical tool. The data sources consist of primary literature, namely the major works of Michael D. Gordin and Sven Ove Hansson relevant to the development of the demarcation problem and criteria for pseudoscience, as well as secondary sources such as books, journals, and general references that aid conceptual understanding. The research procedure was carried out through five stages: collection, sorting, processing, data analysis, and manuscript preparation.

The results show that Gordin’s categorization has a normative-epistemic deficit because it does not provide a basis for distinguishing valid claims from misleading ones. Hansson’s thought, especially the criteria of severe unreliability and deviant doctrines, can complement Gordin’s approach by providing an epistemic foundation that enables a more normative diagnosis of pseudoscience. The researcher proposes a combination of both models, social and epistemic, as a more adequate approach to understanding pseudoscience.
