This study examines the circuit of popular fiction in Indonesia based on Gramedia’s curated lists or categories, which include top or best-selling works from various genres published between 2020—2025. The study aims to investigate the processes through which a literary work is able to attain the status of a top book. Therefore, this research traces the processes experienced by a book, namely production, distribution, and consumption. These three processes are understood as an interconnected sequence, which this study refers to as a circuit. This study on the circuit of popular fiction employs the theories of Ken Gelder and Robert Escarpit by addressing three main questions: (1) how popular fiction is produced; (2) how it is distributed; and (3) how it is consumed in Indonesia during the period of 2020—2025. Several works from this period were selected as the objects of research, including two romance novels by Rintik Sedu, Pukul Setengah Lima (best seller, October 2023) and Musim yang Tak Sempat Kita Miliki (best seller, November 2025); one science fiction (SF) novel by Tere Liye, Hujan (best seller, June 2022); and one digital crime fiction work by Queena, Secret High School (best seller, October 2025). The findings of this study indicate that the circuit of popular fiction does not follow a single unified pattern, as the analysis of its mechanisms of production, distribution, and consumption demonstrates diversity and variation. Such diversity is reflected in the openness of literary production to authors from various backgrounds, the implementation of different techniques and strategies in the distribution process, and the distinct characteristics of each text according to its genre. Nevertheless, despite the absence of a single pattern within the circuit of popular fiction, this study identifies general tendencies in the Indonesian popular fiction circuit during 2020—2025. In terms of production, the process considers both the authors’ backgrounds and the surrounding social conditions. In terms of distribution, the process reflects coexistence with strategies that adapt to developments in digital technology. Meanwhile, the process of consumption takes into account the existence of fandoms and the involvement of the reading public whose preference for romantic elements contributes to shaping subsequent literary production. Thus, the circuit of popular fiction in Indonesia during 2020—2025 takes into consideration the conditioning of public taste and is shaped in accordance with contemporary developments through digital strategies.
