Initially, in deep inelastic scattering (DIS) processes, Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs) encountered a mathematical challenge regarding their lack of gauge invariance when descri bing the internal structure of hadrons. PDFs involve a bi-local quark correlator operator, and evaluating the quark fields at two distinct space-time points introduces a phase shift that renders physical probabilities dependent on the choice of gauge. To restore the SU(3) local gauge symmetry of Quantum Chromodynamics (QCD), a path-ordered exponential operator—known as a Wilson line—is inserted between the quark fields. Because this inser tion is frequently perceived merely as a mathematical trick, it raises a fundamental question regarding its actual physical meaning. Therefore, this study aims to investigate the true physical interpretation of the Wilson line operator using the eikonal approximation in the high-energy scattering limit. The calculations demonstrate that when the interactions of a quark with soft gluons are resummed to all orders, the scattering amplitude reduces to a Wilson line matrix function. It is concluded that the Wilson line in the PDF definition is not merely an ad-hoc mathematical requirement, but rather a genuine physical representation of the phase record of soft gluon interactions experienced by a high-energy particle. Furthermore, it is shown that this physical interpretation also extends to multidimensional PDFs, such as Transverse Momentum Dependent (TMD) PDFs.
