The study area, Klaten Regency, located between the two economic growth centers of Yogyakarta and Surakarta, is experiencing strong pressure on land use change, risking loss of productive agricultural land and mismatches between land use and the land’s bio-physical capacity. This study aims to (1) identify land use changes between 2015 and 2025, (2) project land use for 2035, (3) assess the suitability of existing and projected land use against land capability maps, and (4) formulate guidelines for sustainable land management.
The analysis uses land use maps for the study periods, a land capability map based on nine Land Capability Units (SKL) guided by Permen PU No. 20/PRT/M/2007, and spatial driving factors. Future land use was simulated using an ANN–CA–Markov approach that was calibrated and validated (Kappa = 0,91; overall accuracy = 94,42%). Results indicate a total land use change of 1,414.04 ha during 2015–2025 with a dominant trend of agricultural land conversion to built-up areas (notably an increase in settlements). The 2035 projection estimates a reduction in paddy field area by 796.62 ha and an increase in settlement area by 611.74 ha compared to 2025. Suitability analysis shows a slight decline in the area classified as Suitable (S) from 47,907 ha in 2025 to 47,431 ha in 2035, accompanied by increases in Conditionally Suitable (SB) and Not Suitable (TS) categories (TS increases by 54 ha). Recommendations to support sustainable land management include integrating projection and suitability maps into spatial planning documents, restricting new permits in TS areas, and implementing technical interventions in SB areas.
