ABSTRACT

The performance of photovoltaic (PV) panels is strongly influenced by their operating temperature, particularly in rooftop installations where airflow beneath the panels is limited, causing heat accumulation and reduced efficiency. This study aims to apply a forced convection cooling method using a Venturi-effect ventilation system installed beneath the PV panel to enhance airflow and heat transfer. The ventilation design was developed using SolidWorks and analyzed through CFD simulations with variations of one, three, and five Venturi openings. The simulation results showed that the five-hole Venturi configuration reduced the panel temperature by up to 1.5°C compared to the other configurations. An experimental prototype consisting of five Venturi vents was then developed and tested at wind speeds ranging from 0.5 to 4 m/s. The experimental results demonstrated that the Venturi-effect ventilation increased airflow velocity inside the channel, reducing the panel temperature by approximately 2°C compared to conventional ventilation and about 4°C compared to a panel without ventilation. In addition, the PV panel equipped with Venturi ventilation maintained a stable open-circuit voltage (Voc) of around 20 V and achieved a heat transfer coefficient of 90–200 W/m²°C, which was higher than that of the other configurations. The system also showed potential for integration with a crossflow wind turbine, which rotated at 20 rpm at a wind speed of 1 m/s and reached 1191 rpm at 5 m/s. This study confirms that Venturi-effect ventilation is an effective and low-cost cooling method capable of improving the thermal performance and voltage stability of rooftop PV panels without requiring additional energy consumption.
