Blood on the Tracks by Shuzo Oshimi is one of the manga that represents patterns of mother-child relations and psychological violence. This relationship is understood as the foundational basis in the formation of a child's psychic structure, such that failures in the mother-child relation lead to the emergence of psychic pathology in the child. In social reality, this phenomenon constitutes a global concern. The WHO (2020) reports that globally, 1 in 3 children experience psychological violence by a mother figure or caregiver before the age of 18, indicating that mothers are frequently perpetrators of psychological violence in the context of domestic discipline. This study aims to map the dynamics of the dysfunctional mother-child relationship in Blood on the Tracks through Melanie Klein's psychoanalytic approach.
This study employs a qualitative-interpretative approach grounded in hermeneutics. Data were drawn from Blood on the Tracks and Melanie Klein's psychoanalytic literature as the primary analytical framework. The analysis was conducted through philosophical methodological elements comprising interpretation, conceptual analysis, and critical reflection.
The findings reveal two main conclusions: first, the mother-child relationship in this manga is dominated by the paranoid-schizoid position, manifested through mechanisms of projective identification and the failure of the containing function, which reproduces anxiety transgenerationally. Second, Melanie Klein's psychoanalytic framework proves effective in mapping these dysfunctional dynamics while simultaneously offering a reflective framework for the transformation of psychic structure toward the more mature depressive position, though it carries explanatory limits in addressing psychological violence beyond the subject.
