Frontier Life in America as seen in James Fenimore Cooper's novels The Leather-Stocking tales

Tesis ini berusaha mengungkapkan kehidupan frontier di Amerika pada pertengahan abad 18 sampai awal abad 19. Penelitian ini menggunakan novelnovel James Fenimore Cooper yang terkumpul dalam The Leather-Stocking Tales, yang terdiri dari 5 novel, yaitu The Deerslayer (1841), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Pathfinder (1840), The Pioneers (1823), and The Prairie (1827), sebagai bahan penelitian. Penelitian ini berusaha menjelaskan tiga tujuan yaitu: 1). Frontier sebagai daerah yang membuat berpindah ke daerah tersebut; 2). Sifat-sifat kehidupan frontier di Amerika dan sifat-sifat orang-orang frontier; dan 3). Peran kehidupan frontier dalam pembentukan watak orang Amerika. Untuk mendapatkan hasil analisis yang komprehensif, tesis ini menerapkan pendekatan interdisipliner, yaitu dengan menggunakan berbagai disiplin yang relevan untuk melihat pokok penelitian, khususnya sosiologi, sejarah, sastra, dan budaya. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa frontier merupakan unsur penting bagi orang Amerika karena frontier dapat menjawab permasalahan kekurangan pemukiman. Frontier juga menjadi harapan baru bagi mereka untuk memperoleh kehidupan yang lebih baik. Orang-orang yang tinggal di sepanjang pantai Atlantik mencoba mencari pemukiman baru di frontier karena frontier masih sangat luas untuk dapat didiami. Lagipula mereka dapat mendirikan masyarakat baru yang dapat mereka jadikan batu loncatan untuk mendapatkan wilayah yang ada di sebelah barat tempat tinggal mereka. Pada mulanya, mereka tinggal dekat sungai dan danau karena mereka dapat pergi kemanapun dengan perahu sebagai alat transportasi yang murah. Sejalan dengan perkembangan pemukiman, mereka jauh pergi ke dalam hutan untuk dijadikan pemukiman. Kehidupan di frontier penuh dengan kerja keras, kemandirian, dan kebebasan. Oleh karena itu, mereka harus memenuhi kebutuhan sehari-hari mereka sendiri jika mereka ingin tetap hidup. Demi kebebasan, mereka sering tidak mematuhi hukum.Kesetaraan dan kepercayaan pada diri sendiri juga tumbuh subur di frontier. Mereka juga tidak suka berumah tangga karena memiliki keluarga membuat mereka tidak bebas. Dalam hal ini, frontier telah membentuk watak orang-orang yang tinggal di frontier karena kondisinya yang jauh dari peradaban manusia. Mereka harus menyesuaikan diri terhadap lingkungan dimana mereka tinggal. Mereka sering meniru cara hidup orang Indian. Orang Amerika mewarisi apa yang telah dilakukan oleh orang-orang yang tinggal di frontier. Mereka menjadi manusia-manusia yang mandiri dan bebas. Mereka akan melakukan segala sesuatu tanpa bantuan orang lain, termasuk anak kecil. Agar mereka bisa mandiri dan tidak terikat dengan orang lain, mereka harus bekerja keras sehingga kebutuhan mereka dapat tercukupi. Mereka juga mewarisi watak yang tidak baik dalam kehidupan bermasyarakat, yaitu ketidakpatuhan terhadap hukum. Mereka cenderung menyepelekan hukum yang telah dibuat, termasuk hukum yang dibuat oleh mereka sendiri.

This thesis is an attempt to reveal frontier life in America in the middle of the eighteenth century until in the early of the nineteenth century. This literary study explores James Fenimore Cooper’s novels The Leather-Stocking Tales, which consist of five novels, namely, The Deerslayer (1841), The Last of the Mohicans (1826), The Pathfinder (1840), The Pioneers (1823), and The Prairie (1827), as the mental evidence to explain three objectives of this study: 1). The frontier as an area that attracts people to move into; 2). The characters of the frontier life in America and of the frontiersmen; and 3). The role of the frontier life in shaping the characters of American people. In order to have a comprehensive result of the analysis, this thesis applies interdisciplinary approach, the use of various perspectives from some relevant disciplines to view the subject of the study, particularly the viewpoints of sociology, history, literature, and culture. The result of this study shows that the frontier is important to American people because it can answer the problem of settlement’s insufficiency. The frontier also becomes their new hope to make their lives better. People living along the Atlantic coasts try to look for their new settlement in the frontier because the frontier is still abundant to be settled. Moreover, they can establish a new society that can be used to become a stepping-stone to occupy the area before them toward the west. At first, they live near the rivers and the lakes because they can go anywhere riding the canoes as the cheap transports. In line with the development of the settlement, they go deeper into the forest. Living in the frontier is full of hard work and self-sufficiency as well as independence. For the sake of independence, they often disobey the law. Equality and self-reliance also grow well in the frontier. The frontiersmen, therefore, have to fulfill their daily needs by themselves in order to survive. They do not like to have a family because having a family makes them not free. In this case, the frontier itself has shaped them to have such characters because of its condition that is far from human being’s civilization. They have to adapt to the environment in which they live in order to survive. They often imitate the Indian’s way of life. American people have inherited what the frontiersmen do in order to survive in the frontier. They become independent and self-sufficient people. They will do every thing without being assisted by other people ; this includes children who have to do something by themselves without being assisted by their parents. To become independent and self- sufficient, they have to work hard so that they can fulfill their needs. Not only have they inherited the positive characters, they also have inherited the bad characters, such as their disobedience to the law. They tend to ignore the laws that have been made by other people and by themselves.
