This study aims to analyse the visual novel Steins;Gate using Aarseth’s textonomy framework. The primary focus of the research is to examine how the narrative structure and interactive mechanisms in Steins;Gate relate to aspects of Aarseth’s textonomy, as well as how their application influences the player’s experience and the level of immersion achieved. Games, particularly visual novels, can be categorised as literature in their entirety without having to discard the gaming aspect and focus solely on literature within the gaming medium. However, by employing Aarseth’s theory of Ergodic Literature, games can be considered literature in their entirety by examining aspects of gameplay mechanics, narrative, visual design and background music, as well as player engagement within the game. Steins;Gate presents numerous aspects: the reader acts as a player who possesses the ability and responsibility to shape the narrative through their choices; computer graphics that support the player’s visual experience; background music that helps build the story’s atmosphere, thereby enhancing the player’s immersion; hidden features, and a system of multiple endings that allows players to explore various possible outcomes. This confirms that Steins;Gate is not merely a narrative text, but also an interactive space that positions the player as an integral part of the narrative process. This research is expected to contribute to the study of ergodic literature, digital literature and game studies, particularly in understanding the relationship between textual structure and player interactivity in hybrid media such as visual novels.
