Sustainable development through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) emphasizes the balance among social, economic, and environmental dimensions. The social pillar of the SDGs plays a crucial role in improving public welfare, including achieving gender equality as measured by the Gender Development Index (GDI). Although Java Island records an average GDI above the national level, disparities among regencies and municipalities remain, requiring spatial analysis to better understand distribution patterns and inter-variable relationships. Therefore, this study aims to analyze the spatial distribution, identify the relationship between the achievements of the Social Pillar of the SDGs and the GDI, and determine priority development areas based on spatial and statistical analysis results.
This research employs a quantitative approach with regencies/municipalities in Java Island as the unit of analysis. The analytical methods include spatial autocorrelation analysis using Global Moran’s I, Moran’s Scatterplot, and Local Indicator of Spatial Association (LISA), Spearman Rank correlation test to examine relationships between variables, and overlay mapping to identify priority development areas.
The results indicate that the achievements of the Social Pillar of the SDGs and the GDI in Java Island form significant spatial autocorrelation patterns and tend to be clustered in both 2015 and 2024. The Spearman correlation test reveals significant relationships between several Social Pillar SDGs indicators and the GDI, with varying levels of correlation strength. Spatial overlay analysis identifies priority intervention areas concentrated in Low-Low clusters, indicating relatively low SDGs and GDI achievements.
