The existence of the Mataram Fault, one of the active faults in Yogyakarta, has been examined in various studies, particularly in relation to infrastructure development and its seismic potential. The Mataram Fault is an east-west-trending fault line that traverses densely populated areas in the center of Yogyakarta City, adjacent to the Mataram Canal, and extends eastward to connect with the Dengkeng Fault. However, its kinematic characteristics and potential hazards have not been as comprehensively identified. Furthermore, based on observations from the BMKG Geophysical Station from 2009 to 2024, no significant seismic activity has ever been detected along this fault line. Given the massive infrastructure growth in the region, continuous crustal deformation monitoring using a geodetic approach is a crucial tool for disaster risk mitigation. This study aims to determine the coordinate values, displacement rates, and strain distribution around the Mataram Fault line.

The research data consist of GNSS campaign observations conducted in the 2023 and 2025 epochs from 12 monitoring points in the UGM and Prambanan areas, along with reference stations from the IGS network. The data were processed using GAMIT/GLOBK within the global reference frame ITRF2014 to obtain deformation results with millimeter-level precision. The daily GNSS coordinate solutions were corrected for the regional motion of the Sunda Block using Euler pole rotation parameters. Subsequently, displacement velocity vectors were estimated using the least squares adjustment method. These velocity vectors were then validated through a significance test to assess the statistical significance of coordinate displacements using a Student’s t-test at a 95% confidence level. If deformation is confirmed, the analysis proceeds by calculating extensional and compressional strain values around the Mataram Fault zone using the Velocity Interpolation for Strain Rate (VISR) algorithm.

Based on the ITRF2014, the uncertainty (standard deviation) ranges from 0.0113 to 0.3405 m for the X component, 0.0193 to 0.6146 m for the Y component, and 0.0063 to 0.1122 m for the Z component. Most observation points have not yet achieved the ideal precision below 1 cm, with the lowest accuracy observed at station TGD1 due to IOD slip disturbances. The horizontal displacement rates show that the East component ranges from 22.12 to 34.49 mm/year and the North component from -7.17 to 3.05 mm/year, with a dominant eastward direction. After the Sunda Block reduction, the East component ranges from -9.6 to 28.9 mm/year and the North component from -6.97 to 3 mm/year, indicating more variable directions. The vertical component ranges from -42.5 to 29.5 mm/year. Strain analysis could not be determined reliably, as only station UGM4 exhibited statistically significant displacement in all three components (E, N, U), while the other stations showed inconsistent or insignificant results. In addition, the spatial distribution of campaign points, which is both too dense and limited in number, results in an observation network insufficient to form a valid strain pattern.
