This study uses Cok Sawitri’s novel Sitayana, published in 2019. The novel is deconstruction of Sita’s character in the oral tradition of the Ramayana. Sita’s character is not given space for dialogue in other literary works, but the novel explores Sita’s expression of the injustice she suffers by means of dialogue between characters and narrative. The narrative emphasizes her unwavering persistence in fulfilling her role as a loyal wife. On the other hand, Sita exercises agency through hidden forms of resistance. The purpose of this study is to identify Sita’s forms of hidden transcript or hidden resistance as a female subject. This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using primary and secondary data, analyzed through Antonio Gramsci’s theory of hegemony to identify aspects of patriarchal culture, and James C. Scott’s concept of hidden transcripts to examine forms of resistance.
The results indicate that Sita enacted hidden resistance through acts of emotional expression, meditating on the Gods, and gossip. These actions culminate in a revolutionary ending due to their consistent enactment. The final results is the accumulation of hidden resistance. Furthermore, gender significantly influences the forms of hidden resistance that emerge Kaikeyi and Trijata are unable to openly express their feelings, whereas Rsi Walmiki and Laksmana can publicly articulate their disagreement. This contrast reinforces the assumption of a social hierarchy in which gender differences result in the emergence of hidden forms of resistance.
