This study examines the life journey of Jean Lucien Hicks (1916-1975) as an Indo-European who experienced various social and political changes in Indonesia in the 20th century. This study uses a biographical and genealogical approach by tracing Jean Lucien Hicks' family background, education, career during the Dutch period, and his experiences during the Japanese period, the Revolution, and the period of Indonesian sovereignty. The author uses a historical method consisting of 4 stages: topic selection, heuristics or source collection, source criticism, and historiography. The source collection carried out was documentation, interviews, and literature studies.
The results of the study show that the life journey of Jean Lucien Hicks, who was born in 1916 in Semarang, provides an explanation of Indo-Europeans in Indonesia in the 20th century through a micro lens. As an Indo-European, Jean Lucien Hicks was in a vulnerable and ambiguous position. During the Japanese period, Jean Lucien Hicks lived as an internee soldier. After Indonesia proclaimed its independence, Jean Lucien Hicks decided to join the KNIL (National Army). When Indonesia regained its sovereignty from the Dutch, Jean Lucien Hicks continued his career as a prison officer on Nusakambangan Island as an Indonesian citizen as an adaptation strategy for his survival. This research places biography as a micro-lens to provide context for Indonesian history, specifically the Indo-European group in Indonesia in the 20th century
