The analysis of cause-specific mortality requires a compositional framework, as cause-of-death proportions must be positive and sum to one, making separate modeling potentially incoherent. The classification of causes of death based on the standards of the World Health Organization through the ICD system implies that each death is assigned to a single cause, supporting the need of a  joint modeling approach. In addition, mortality variation arises from the interaction of age, period, and cohort (APC), which cannot be directly identified. This study aims to model cause-of-death compositions coherently within an APC framework and to identify the specification with the best predictive performance.

The proposed approach is a hierarchical Dirichlet model in a Bayesian framework, where the APC structure is introduced by modeling additive log-ratio transformations of the compositional mean, and estimation is performed using Hamiltonian Monte Carlo with the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS). The empirical results based on U.S. female mortality data from 1990–2018 show that the model consistently reproduces observed mortality compositions, with the specification treating cohort effects as stochastic providing superior predictive performance. This approach offers a more realistic representation by preserving compositional coherence while capturing the interdependence between causes of death.
