Roots in The Ruins: The Green Anarchist Shift in Indonesia's Climate Justice Movement Amidst Jokowism

The global climate discourse is not a neutral vacuum; it is a contested arena of power between political actors. I examine how the Joko Widodo administration (2014–2024) co-opted green narratives to shield an extractive development model, a phenomenon I term ‘Jokowism’. As oligarchy consolidates and democratic institutions crumble, conventional advocacy directed at the state has become obsolete. In response, the climate justice movement has pivoted toward 'anarchist-adjacent' praxis. Through the lens of green anarchism, I analyze how Climate Rangers (CR) Indonesia expanded its wings toward green anarchist strategies: decentralization, prefigurative politics, and direct action. This shift demonstrates that when the state creates a political and functional void, the people will always find its way to fill it: building resilience and rooting themselves in the ruins of authoritarianism.
