As the need for large-scale integration of renewable energy, particularly offshore wind farms, continues to grow, hybrid High Voltage Direct Current (HVDC) transmission systems have emerged as a strategic solution. This research investigates the transient stability of a hybrid multi-terminal HVDC (MTDC) system using an Electromagnetic Transient (EMT) simulation approach. The modeled system combines Voltage Source Converters (VSC) at two offshore rectifier terminals with a Line-Commutated Converter (LCC) at the onshore inverter terminal, which is tested under various three-phase short- circuit fault scenarios.
The simulation results demonstrate that the hybrid MTDC system exhibits high resilience to offshore-side faults, proving the effectiveness of the DC voltage control sys- tem at the LCC inverter in balancing power flow during partial and total losses of power infeed. However, tests on the LCC terminal successfully identified the critical vulnerabi- lity of this topology. A fault at the onshore AC terminal of the LCC inverter consistently causes a commutation failure, resulting in a DC link voltage collapse and a significantly prolonged system recovery time.
This study affirms that the primary transient stability challenge in the hybrid VSC- LCC topology is the LCC inverter’s vulnerability to disturbances on the onshore AC grid. These findings can serve as a basis for the development of more advanced control and protection strategies for LCC inverters, aiming to enhance the reliability of hybrid HVDC systems for future renewable energy transmission applications.
