Comparative Analysis on the Paradox of Repression towards Secessionists in Post-2017 Referendum Catalonia and Papua Post-2019 Uprising

Bagaimana represi negara menciptakan kondisi bagi tumbuhnya gerakan kemerdekaan? Artikel ini menggunakan analisis komparatif untuk menganalisis trayektori perlawanan gerakan kemerdekaan Katalonia dan Papua Barat di bawah represi negara dan bagaimana hal tersebut bekerja secara paradoks. Artikel ini menemukan bahwa di kedua wilayah tersebut, represi negara digunakan sebagai metode untuk mendorong gerakan separatis agar dapat melakukan penyensoran diri. Tujuan penyensoran diri ini menjadi metode demobilisasi yang paling utama dan hegemonik. Lebih lanjut, studi ini bertujuan untuk menyoroti medan aksi, jaringan hubungan-gerakan, dan investasi emosional yang terlibat dalam membentuk identitas kolektif dalam gerakan di tengah represi. Studi ini bertujuan untuk berkontribusi pada pemahaman gerakan sosial global dan represi dalam hubungan internasional, serta wacana seuptar gerakan separatis dalam politik kontemporer.

How has state repression created the conditions for the secessionist movement to rise? This article uses comparative analysis to examine the trajectory of resistance by the Catalan and West Papuan secessionist movements under state repression and how this trajectory paradoxically unfolds. This article finds that in both regions, state repression is being used as a method pushing secessionist movements to self-censor themselves. This goal of self-censoring becomes the most ultimate and hegemonic method of demobilisation. Furthermore, this study aims to highlight the field of action, the network of relations, and the emotional investment involved in shaping collective identity within the movement amid repression. This study aims to contribute to the understanding of identity-based movements in global social movements, repression in international relations, and the discourse surrounding secessionist movements in contemporary politics.
