Belibis Kecil (Dendrocygna javanica) merupakan salah satu burung air yang mendiami muara Sungai Progo, rawa-rawa, kolam, persawahan, tegalan dan genangan air yang masih terisi oleh air hujan. Keberadaan dan kelimpahan dari burung-burung air penghuni ekosistem lahan basah dapat dijadikan sebagai indikator penting dari produktivitas suatu ekosistem lahan basah tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui: karakteristik habitat Belibis Kecil, keberadaan Belibis Kecil di habitat alamnya dan tipe serta pemanfaatan habitat oleh Belibis Kecil. Manfaat dari penelitian ini adalah sebagai sumber data dan informasi mengenai habitat dan keberadaan Belibis Kecil di habitat alamnya. Lokasi penelitian di muara Sungai Progo dan Rawa Sen serta daerah sekitarnya. Pengamatan dilakukan secara langsung di lapangan. Faktor-faktor yang diamati yaitu faktor fisik, kimia dan biologi ekosistem habitat. Hal tersebut untuk mengetahui karakteristik habitat. Pengamatan juga dilakukan terhadap aktivitas Belibis Kecil. Muara Sungai Progo adalah habitat bagi Belibis Kecil bila dilihat dari sejarahnya. Namun kenyataan sekarang tempat ini hanya dijadikan tempat persinggahan bagi belibis Kecil, bila di Rawa Sen terdapat ancaman. Setelah keadaan tenang, mereka terbang kembali ke Rawa Sen. Hasil identifikasi habitat muara sungai secara fisik, kimia dan biologis, tempat ini masih bisa menampung kehidupan burung-burung air yang ada. Namun dilihat dari gangguan, daerah ini memiliki aktivitas dan mobilitas yang tinggi, baik itu untuk pertanian, perikanan maupun penggembalaan. Rawa Sen merupakan habitat yang paling disukai oleh Belibis Kecil. Hal ini dikarekan wilayah ini sebagai habitat dapat menyediakan kebutuhan hidupnya dan yang paling penting, daerah ini relatif cukup tenang dari aktivitas manusia. Sebagian besar aktivitas Belibis Kecil dihabiskan di tempat ini, baik itu makan, bermain hingga tidur. Selain muara Sungai Progo dan Rawa Sen, Belibis Kecil juga dapat dijumpai pada habitat seperti: sawah, tegalan, kolam pemancingan, dan sungai. Tipe habitat yang disukainya adalah tipe habitat yang tergenang air dengan arus tenang dan permukaan airnya ditumbuhi oleh vegetasi air. Belibis Kecil berada di wilayah ini pada musim hujan hingga pertengahan musim kemarau. Pada musim kemarau yang panjang mereka migrasi ke dalam mendekati hulu-hulu sungai. Keberadaan Belibis Kecil di wilayah ini cukup memprihatinkan bila ditinjau dari populasi yang ada. Tahun 2000 populasinya masih 75 ekor, namun pada saat sekarang, populasi Belibis Kecil tidak lebih dari 12 ekor. Hal ini dikarenakan keadaan habitat yang sudah tidak memungkinkan untuk dihuni oleh Belibis Kecil, karena adanya gangguan dari manusia yang mempergunakan habitat Belibis Kecil sebagai tempat mencari nafkah bagi keluarga.

Belibis Kecil (Dendrocygna javanica Horsfield, 1821) representing one of waterfowl that inhabiting estuary of Progo River, and also the sites around that area, like marshland, pool, rice field, non irrigated farm field and water pond that irrigated by rainwater. The overflowing population of birds as a dweller in the wet farm ecosystem, considered as an important indicator of wet farm ecosystem productivity. The research purpose is to know the characteristic of Belibis Kecil, the existence of Belibis Kecil in its nature, and the type and also utilized habitat by Belibis Kecil. Benefit from this research as source of data and information that concerning Belibis Kecil habitat and their existence in its nature habitat. The location that had been conducted for this research is in estuary of River of Progo River and Sen Bog and also some neighbor area. The research conducted directly in the field. The factors perceived are physical factor, biological factor and chemical factor of ecosystem habitat. The purpose is to understand the habitat characteristic. Study is also conducted to Belibis Kecil activity. The estuary of Progo River known as the habitat for Belibis Kecil. But in the fact, for now, this place is just a sojourn place for Belibis Kecil, when Sen Bog in alerted situation. After the situation gets down and calmer, they re-flown to Sen Bog. Result identify the habitat of river estuary in physical, chemical and biologic thing, this place still can accommodate the existing of water birds life. But, when its observe from the trouble that comes to the place, this area is in the high mobilities and activities, connected with human activities, like the agriculture , fishery and also pasturing. Sen Bog represent the most habitat that preferred by Belibis Kecil. Because the habitat can provide its life needs and most importantly, this area relatively far from human being activities. Mostly, Belibis Kecil spend much of the time in here, like forage, playing at or sleep. The other places besides the estuary of Progo River and Sen Bog that also visited by Belibis Kecil are rice field, non irrigated dry field, fishing pond, and Galur River. Habitat type that took a fancy of Belibis Kecil is habitat that suffused by water during the calm current and its water surface covered by some water plants. Belibis Kecil will remain in this area until the rain stop falling in the middle of dry season. In the longest dry season they migrate into the river upstreams. The existence of Belibis Kecil in the region is in danger condition. In the year 2000, Belibis Kecil population is 75, but at the time of this research taken place, the population is only 12. This caused by human activity that exploiting the habitat to earn something to their own life and family.
