The increasing of particulate matter emission generated from biomass combustion, particularly soot particles, has become a critical concern in the development of sustainable energy systems. This study employs a Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) approach to develop a biomass combustion model capable of predicting combustion behaviour in a drop tube furnace, to establish an accurate model for soot particle prediction in biomass combustion systems, and to evaluate the computational efficiency of different soot formation models. The investigated system is a drop tube furnace based on previously published experimental data, with wall temperature variations ranging from 1000-1300 C. The modelling framework applies a non-premixed combustion approach based on the flamelet PDF method, the SST k-omega turbulence model, and the Discrete Ordinates (DO) radiation model. Three soot formation models-one-step, two-step, and Moss-Brookes-are systemically compared to asses their predictive accuracy and computational efficiency.
The simulation results indicate that the developed combustion model succesfully represents the characteristics of biomass combustion, as demonstrated by good agreement between predicted and experimental temperature profiles, with relatively low deviations (<10%). Overall, the study confirms that controlling combustion parameters such as temperature, oxygen distribution, and mixture fraction is essential for minimizing soot emissions. The one-step model is simplest and most computationally efficient approach; however, it shows limited sensitivity to local combustion conditions and tends to produce higher deviations in predicted soot yield. The two-step model captures the general trend of soot variation with temperature but tends to emphasize soot formation over oxidation, leading to larger deviations at elevated temperatures. The Moss-Brookes model provides the highest level of accuracy in predicting soot yield and mass fraction distribution compared to experimental data, with very low deviations in soot yield (<5%). This model is capable of simultaneously representing nucleation, surface growth, coagulation, and oxidation mechanisms, and is therefore recommended as the most representative approach for simulating soot formation in biomass combustion systems.
