The clean water crisis and the rapid growth of the water treatment technology market create both opportunities and strategic challenges for corporations pursuing business diversification. PT Air Bersih Internasional, as the parent company, manages a business portfolio that includes PT Air Minum Segar, which operates in the drinking water depot sector, and PT Semua Limbah Hilang, which focuses on liquid waste treatment. Differences in business model characteristics and critical success factors across these subsidiaries give rise to potential misalignment between the parent company’s corporate parenting approach and the strategic needs of each business unit. Therefore, evaluating parenting fit becomes crucial to preventing value destruction while maximizing synergy within the business group.
This study employs a descriptive qualitative method using a case study approach. Data were collected through in-depth interviews with the main directors of PT Air Bersih Internasional and the management teams of PT Air Minum Segar and PT Semua Limbah Hilang, complemented by an analysis of internal company documents. Data analysis was conducted thematically to identify corporate parenting characteristics, critical success factors, parenting opportunities, and the degree of parenting fit, referring to the Parenting Fit Matrix framework.
The findings indicate that both PT Air Minum Segar and PT Semua Limbah Hilang are positioned at the edge of heartlandwithin the parenting fit matrix. The trust-driven and support-based parenting approach adopted by PT Air Bersih Internasional has been shown to create added value, particularly in strengthening market access and institutional legitimacy. However, the study also identifies several misalignments, including gaps in technical capability development, weaknesses in after-sales systems, and a high dependence on key individuals. Based on these findings, the study recommends the adoption of a Functional Leader–based parenting strategy focused on enhancing technical capabilities in accordance with the specific characteristics of each subsidiary, establishing an integrated after-sales system, and strengthening cross-company synergy governance to move both entities toward the heartland zone and achieve sustainable corporate advantage.
