Population growth in Klaten Regency has continued to increase, exerting pressure on the availability of residential land and encouraging the conversion of productive agricultural land into built-up areas. This condition has been further influenced by the development of the Yogyakarta–Solo Toll Road, which has improved regional accessibility and stimulated residential expansion in strategic locations. The analysis of residential land carrying capacity and population holding capacity is conducted to assess the ability of the region to accommodate population growth based on physical land conditions and spatial planning policies. This study uses secondary data obtained from government institutions of Klaten Regency. The data were processed using a geometric population projection method for the period 2025–2045. Land capability analysis was carried out through map overlay techniques using ArcGIS software, along with calculations of residential land carrying capacity and population holding capacity based on land suitability classification. The results of residential land carrying capacity were classified into supporting (DDPm > 1) and non supporting (DDPm < 1>
The population of Klaten Regency is projected to continue increasing annually, reaching 1,705,043 people by 2045. The total area of suitable residential land in Klaten Regency is 21,039.08 hectares. The residential land carrying capacity (DDPm) shows a declining trend from 4.16 in 2025 to 3.22 in 2045, in line with population growth and increasing land demand. Meanwhile, the population holding capacity of Klaten Regency is projected to increase from approximately 4.95 million people in 2025 to 5.79 million people in 2045. The total residential land requirement is projected to rise from about 10,554.42 hectares in 2025 to 13,640.34 hectares in 2045. Evaluation of the Klaten Regency Spatial Plan (RTRW) 2021–2041 indicates that the allocation of residential land remains greater than the projected residential land demand up to 2045, although pressure on suitable land tends to increase in certain areas.
