Antithetical Ideologies in Politicians' Warrants and Interviews on Palestinian Immigration Issue

Wacana Israel-Palestina dalam ranah politik Amerika selalu menarik untuk diteliti karena sentimen yang menyertainya. Studi ini bertujuan untuk menjelaskan perspektif para politisi dalam menanggapi rencana imigrasi Palestina yang dipertimbangkan oleh Presiden Joe Biden. Data penelitian terdiri dari dua surat argumentatif dengan bukti-bukti untuk memperkuat argumen, satu diinisiasi oleh 35 senator Republik dan yang lainnya oleh 69 senator dan perwakilan Demokrat. Selain itu, dua konferensi pers dengan Senator Mitch McConnell dan Gubernur Florida DeSantis, dan dua wawancara dengan Senator Bernie Sanders dan Anggota Kongres Ilhan Omar, diambil dari Forbes Breaking News, Hasan Minhaj, dan Bloomberg Originals sebagai data pendukung. Studi ini menggunakan analisis wacana kritis van Dijk, dengan metode deskriptif-kualitatif, untuk menganalisis struktur wacana, kognisi sosial, dan konteks sosial. 

Hasil analisis menunjukkan adanya perspektif yang berlawanan antara kubu Republik dan Demokrat dalam menanggapi rencana Biden untuk mengizinkan warga Palestina masuk ke Amerika Serikat. Tema yang diangkat oleh politisi Republik adalah agar Biden menghentikan rencana tersebut, sementara politisi Demokrat menuntut agar rencana tersebut segera dilaksanakan. Temuan penanda linguistik didominasi oleh penggunaan leksikon dengan implikasi negatif yang digunakan oleh politisi Republik dan leksikon empatik yang digunakan oleh politisi Demokrat. Dengan demikian, kognisi sosial tercermin dalam data bahwa politisi Republik berperan sebagai penyelamat bagi warga Amerika, sementara politisi Demokrat berperan sebagai pahlawan dengan pendekatan humanis terhadap imigran. Selain itu, konteks sosial, seperti ideologi konservatif politisi Republik dan ideologi liberal politisi Demokrat, memiliki pengaruh signifikan terhadap perspektif mereka. Temuan studi ini diharapkan dapat memberikan pengetahuan baru untuk analisis wacana kritis, khususnya dalam aspek wacana politik.

The discourse of Israel-Palestinians in the United States' political realm is intriguing to study because of the sentiments that followed. This study aims to explain the politicians' perspectives in responding to the Palestinian immigration plan considered by President Joe Biden as a way of de-escalating the Israel-Palestinian conflict. The research data consists of two warrants, argumentative letters with evidence to strengthen the arguments, one initiated by 35 Republican senators and the other by 69 Democratic senators and representatives. The supporting data includes two press briefings with Senator Mitch McConnell and Florida's Governor DeSantis, and two interviews with Senator Bernie Sanders and Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, taken from Forbes Breaking News, Hasan Minhaj, and Bloomberg Originals. This study employed van Dijk's critical discourse analysis, using a descriptive-qualitative method, to analyze discourse structures, social cognition, and social context.

The findings of the analysis discovered the existence of antithetical perspectives on the Republican and the Democratic side on responding to Biden's plan to allow Palestinians to enter the United States. The Republican theme is that Biden should halt the plan, whilst Democratic senators and representatives demand that it be implemented immediately. The findings on linguistic markers show that Republican politicians employ lexicons with negative implications, while Democratic politicians use empathetic lexicons. Thus, social cognition reflected in the data showed that Republican politicians played a savior role for United States citizens, while Democratic politicians played the role of heroes toward immigrants. Additionally, social context, such as the conservative ideology of Republican politicians and the liberal ideology of Democratic politicians, significantly influenced their perspectives. The findings of this study are expected to bring new knowledge to critical discourse analysis, especially in political discourse.
