The Great Depression of the 1930s affected every aspect of life, including household matters. Faced with difficulties in providing for their families, a group of European women in the Dutch East Indies took the initiative to establish a housewives' association to address these issues and support one another, called the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen. A handful of Bumiputera and Tionghoa women also joined this association. However, solidarity among housewives across different groups was not readily accepted, given how they were positioned in different strata by the colonial authorities. This study attempts to describe the development of the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen as a space that was initially formed by and for European women in response to the economic crisis of the 1930s, as well as the process of Bumiputera and Tionghoa women joining the association and the dynamics between women from various social groups within the association. Using historical research methods, this study utilizes magazines published by the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen and newspapers that reported on the association's existence as primary sources.
It was found that the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen was first established in Surabaya in June 1931 by a group of European women. In the following years, the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen was also established in other cities, such as Batavia, Bandung, Medan, Semarang, Sukabumi, Buitenzorg, Malang, Yogyakarta, Solo, Cirebon, and Magelang. To facilitate communication and strengthen ties between associations, the Bond van Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen in Indië was formed as a union that oversaw associations at the city level. In its development, a handful of Bumiputera and Tionghoa women who joined this association were the elite women. Although it did not restrict membership, the Vereeniging van Huisvrouwen indirectly created exclusivity by only using Dutch in its agendas. These agendas represent the relationship between race and class in colonial Indonesian society.
