Through The Eyes of Gen Z: Carrie Bradshaw's Hopeless Romanticism in 'Sex and the City' (1998)

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengeksplorasi penerimaan penonton muda Indonesia – khususnya berusia 18-25 tahun terhadap romantisme tanpa harapan yang diwujudkan oleh karakter Carrie Bradshaw dalam serial Sex and the City (1998). Penelitian ini akan fokus pada bagaimana audiens muda– terlebih lagi Generasi Z– dalam menafsirkan gagasan ‘hopeless romanticism’ dan bagaimana penerimaan mereka melengkapi pemahaman mereka tentang cinta dan perkembangan identitas selama masa dewasa awal. Berdasarkan teori Resepsi Audiens oleh Stuart Hall, penelitian yang dilakukan akan menggunakan metodologi kualitatif, dengan memasukkan wawancara mendalam kepada partisipan terkait, observasi, serta studi literatur mengenai topik tersebut. Temuan penelitian ini menyoroti nuansa interpretasi, reaksi, dan resonansi penonton muda Indonesia terhadap tema tema serial tersebut, khususnya bagaimana penonton memandang idealisme cinta yang diwujudkan oleh tokoh utama serial tersebut – Carrie Bradshaw – dalam serial tersebut, yang pada generasi sekarang disebut sebagai romantisme 'putus asa' atau hopeless romanticism.

This research aims to explore the reception of Indonesian young audiences– particularly aged 18-25 in regards to hopeless romanticism that is embodied by the character Carrie Bradshaw in the series Sex and the City (1998). This research will be focusing on how the young audiences– particularly Generation Z– interpret the idea of hopeless romanticism and how their reception complements their understanding of love and identity development during early adulthood. Drawing upon the Audience Reception theory by Stuart Hall, the research conducted will be utilizing the qualitative methodology, inserting an in-depth interview with the participants related, observation, as well as literature studies regarding the topic. The findings of this research highlight the nuanced interpretations, reactions, and resonance of the Indonesian youth audiences to the series’ themes, particularly how the audience perceived the idealism of love that the series’ main character– Carrie Bradshaw– embodied in the series, in which in today’s generation called ‘hopeless’ romanticism.
