This study analyzes the illocutionary speech acts uttered by participants in the Korean cooking competition show Culinary Class Wars (?????: ?? ?? ??), episodes 6 and 7. The purpose of this research is to identify the types and functions of illocutionary acts that appear and to compare the most dominant forms and functions between the White Spoon Team and the Black Spoon Team. This study employs a qualitative descriptive method, applying Searle’s (1979) classification of illocutionary act types and Leech’s (1983) theory of illocutionary functions.

The results show that both teams performed four types of illocutionary acts, directive, assertive, commissive, and expressive, while declarative acts were not found. Each type of speech act was realized through four functions: competitive, collaborative, convivial, and conflictive. Directive acts were the most dominant with competitive functions. The White Spoon Team tended to use directive forms of command, while the Black Spoon Team demonstrated more flexible variations. Assertive acts in both teams were dominated by collaborative functions, although the White Spoon Team showed a higher tendency toward conflictive functions. Commissive acts in both teams reflected convivial functions, whereas expressive acts from both teams mainly displayed conflictive functions. Differences in members’ backgrounds and working dynamics influenced each team’s communication style: the White Spoon Team exhibited a communication pattern that was generally more direct, and when conflictive functions appeared, conflicts were expressed explicitly and assertively. Meanwhile, the Black Spoon Team showed a more flexible and adaptive communication style suited to cooperative contexts under competitive pressure.
