Kultur Diam dalam Relasi Keluarga: Cerita Hidup Kaum Muda Kontemporer Jawa di Yogyakarta

Penelitian etnografi pendekatan refleksi kritis ini mengkaji praktik kultur diam kaum muda kontemporer Jawa dalam relasi keluarga di kawasan suburban Yogyakarta. Melalui wawancara mendalam dan observasi terhadap empat informan di Padukuhan Pogung Kidul, menghasilkan temuan diam menjadi bahasa simbolik yang dinamis untuk menjaga harmoni, menghindari konflik, serta menegosiasikan identitas dalam isu-isu modern seperti pendidikan dan pekerjaan. Lebih dari sekadar aplikasi teori diam keluarga Jawa, penelitian ini memperluas pemahaman Hildred Geertz tentang diam sebagai cerminan stratifikasi sosial masyarakat Jawa tradisional melalui sistem etika bahasa berdasarkan usia, kekayaan, dan hierarki yang kaku. Elaborasi teori diam keluarga Jawa Hildred Geertz dan teori space of flows Manuel Castells, penelitian ini justru menunjukkan dalam konteks kaum muda kontemporer Jawa, praktik diam telah mengalami hibridisasi. Nilai-nilai tradisi berinteraksi dengan transformasi sosial, seperti perubahan peran gender dan keberadaan ruang digital, sehingga menghasilkan bentuk diam yang lebih cair, kontekstual, dan sarat dengan agensi individu. Dengan demikian, penelitian ini tidak hanya memetakan makna baru kultur diam, tetapi juga menawarkan perspektif kritis bahwa diam dalam keluarga Jawa masa kini merupakan praktik yang aktif beradaptasi, melampaui penjelasan struktural yang statis. Rekomendasi penelitian lanjutan mencakup perluasan wilayah penelitian dengan melibatkan kaum muda kontemporer Jawa di berbagai tempat geografis yang berbeda, baik di kawasan urban maupun rural.

This critical reflection-based ethnographic study examines the practice of the culture of silence among contemporary Javanese youth within family relations in the suburban area of Yogyakarta. Through in-depth interviews and observations of four informants in Padukuhan Pogung Kidul, the study finds that silence functions as a dynamic symbolic language to maintain harmony, avoid conflict, and negotiate identity in modern issues such as education and employment. Moving beyond a mere application of the theory of Javanese family silence, this research expands Hildred Geertz's understanding of silence as a reflection of traditional Javanese social stratification—enforced through a rigid linguistic ethic system based on age, wealth, and hierarchy. By elaborating on Hildred Geertz's theory of Javanese family silence and Manuel Castells' theory of the space of flows, this study demonstrates that, within the context of contemporary Javanese youth, the practice of silence has undergone hybridization. Traditional values interact with social transformations, such as shifting gender roles and the presence of digital spaces, resulting in a more fluid, contextual form of silence imbued with individual agency. Thus, this research not only maps new meanings of the culture of silence but also offers a critical perspective that silence in present-day Javanese families is an actively adaptive practice, surpassing static structural explanations. Recommendations for further research include expanding the study area by involving contemporary Javanese youth from various geographical locations, both in urban and rural regions.
