Dental implants are increasingly favored in dentistry. However, they could lead to infections such as periimplantitis and periimplant mucositis. One bacterium that may contribute to these infections is Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa). One approach to reduce the risk of infection caused by P. aeruginosa is to coat the implant surface with magnesium hydroxide [Mg(OH)?], which is known to have antibacterial properties. This study aimed to know the effect of exposure duration to Mg(OH)? in inhibiting the growth of P. aeruginosa.
Testing was carried out by mixing a liquid culture of P. aeruginosa with a Mg(OH)? suspension at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL. The mixture was then incubated for 24, 48, and 72 hours and inoculated onto BHI agar at each interval. BHI agar was then incubated for 24 hours at 37°C, and the number of colonies that grew was counted using a colony counter. Data were analyzed using one-way ANOVA followed by a post hoc LSD test.
The ANOVA results showed a significance value of p < 0>P. aeruginosa colonies due to differences in Mg(OH)? exposure time. The post hoc LSD analysis showed significant differences among exposure-duration groups (24, 48, and 72 hours). However, the significant differences observed reflected an increase in the number of P. aeruginosa colonies as exposure time increased, based on the mean values. In conclusion, Mg(OH)? at a concentration of 0.1 mg/mL is not able to slow the growth of P. aeruginosa across the exposure durations tested.
