This study examines how
young Indonesians participating in Australia's Work and Holiday Visa
(WHV) subclass 462 program construct reflexivity in their transition to the
world of work. Engaging seven informants, this paper demonstrates that
transnational mobility is motivated not only by limited domestic employment
opportunities but also by the aspiration to construct a "chosen
biography" amidst socio-economic uncertainty. Using an interpretive
qualitative approach with a biographical narrative method and grounded in the
concepts of reflexivity, mobility turn, and mobile transitions, this study explores
how pre-mobility experiences, work experiences and conditions in Australia, and
post-mobility orientations are constructed and interpreted by young people. The
findings indicate that transnational mobility produces ambivalent experiences;
on the one hand, WHV provides young people with economic opportunities and
hopes and expands their personal capacities, but on the other hand, the program
also presents new risks such as productivity pressures, social loneliness, and
even physical injury. This suggests that mobility to a developed country,
Australia, does not eliminate young people's vulnerabilities, but rather shifts
them to different forms of risk that must be negotiated independently. Overall,
this paper emphasizes that WHV is not only viewed as an economic strategy, but
also as a reflexive space that shapes young people's understanding of their
identity, values, and future in an uncertain global context.
