MEMBACA GAUDIUM ET SPES MELALUI PERSPEKTIF CHARLES TAYLOR TENTANG SEKULARISASI: UPAYA AGAMA DALAM MENCARI MAKNA DI ERA SEKULER

Penelitian ini berjudul “Membaca Gaudium et Spes melalui Perspektif Charles Taylor tentang Sekularisasi: Upaya Agama dalam Mencari Makna di Era Sekuler”. Tesis penulis berangkat dari kurangnya eksplanasi yang adil dari teori sekularisasi yang Charles Taylor sebut sebagai “subtraction stories” terhadap fenomena-fenomena transformasi religius di dunia modern. Secara khusus penulis akan mengajukan analisis terhadap Gaudium et Spes sebagai antitesis dari asumsi reduktif subtraction stories tersebut. Konstitusi Pastoral Gaudium et Spes hadir sebagai bentuk upaya Gereja untuk terlibat dalam pencarian makna di era sekuler melalui suatu transformasi pada visi pastoralnya.

Penelitian ini memilih metode studi kepustakaan terhadap pemikiran Charles Taylor tentang sekularisasi, khususnya dalam buku A Secular Age. Alasannya, penulis menemukan bahwa perspektif Taylor tentang sekularisasi memiliki kecukupannya sendiri dalam menerangkan dan menguji reliabilitas pembacaan Gaudium et Spes terhadap keadaan sekuler dunia modern. Taylor lebih tertarik untuk menyelam ke dalam sejarah sekularisasi untuk menemukan kondisi meta dari pergeseran-pergeseran condition of belief setiap era dalam sejarah masyarakat Barat.

Melalui instrumen konseptual itu, analisis dalam tulisan ini menemukan bahwa Gaudium et Spes memilih jalan transformatif untuk dapat berdialog dengan dunia modern yang sama sekali khas dan otonom. Setelah menganalisis perubahan paradigma Gereja terhadap dunia modern, pembahasan akan bermuara pada  empat aspek yang diserukan oleh Gaudium et Spes sebagai upaya untuk menyediakan makna bagi malaise of modernity: 1) membangun solidaritas Gereja dengan dunia; 2) inkarnasi Kristus sebagai pusat makna; 3) mengelevasi rasionalitas instrumental modern; serta 4) menyerukan suatu kemenyatuan setiap manusia dalam memperjuangkan keluhuran martabat manusia.

This writing is entitled “Reading Gaudium et Spes through Charles Taylor's Perspective on Secularization: Religion's Vocation in the Search for Meaning in a Secular Age”. The author's thesis originates from the inadequacy of the explanations provided by secularization theories, which Charles Taylor refers to as “subtraction stories,” in accounting for the phenomena of religious transformation in the modern world. Specifically, the author will propose an analysis of Gaudium et Spes as an antithesis to the reductive assumptions of these subtraction stories. The Pastoral Constitution Gaudium et Spes emerges as a form of the Church's endeavor to engage in the search for meaning in a secular age through a transformation of its pastoral vision.

This research employs a literature study method concerning Charles Taylor's thought on secularization, particularly in his book A Secular Age. The rationale is that the author finds Taylor's perspective on secularization possesses its own sufficiency in explaining and testing the reliability of a reading of Gaudium et Spes in relation to the secular condition of the modern world. Taylor is more interested in delving into the history of secularization to uncover the meta-conditions for the shifts in the "condition of belief" across various eras in the history of Western society.

Through this conceptual instrument, the analysis in this writing finds that Gaudium et Spes chooses a transformative path to be able to dialogue with a modern world that is entirely distinctive and autonomous. After analyzing the paradigm shift of the Church towards the modern world, the discussion will culminate in four aspects advocated by Gaudium et Spes as efforts to provide meaning for the malaise of modernity: 1) building the Church's solidarity with the world; 2) the incarnation of Christ as the center of meaning; 3) elevating modern instrumental rationality; and 4) advocating for a unity of all humanity in striving for the dignity of the human person.
