POLITIK ESTETIKA DAN STRATEGI PUITIK PUISI JERICHO BROWN DALAM KUMPULAN PUISI THE TRADITION SEBAGAI KRITIK TERHADAP KONSTRUKSI KEKERASAN DI AMERIKA

Penelitian ini menganalisis puisi-puisi Jericho Brown dalam koleksi The Tradition (2019) dengan menempatkan puisi Brown sebagai bentuk intervensi politik terhadap kekerasan di Amerika. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menganalisis bagaimana strategi puitik puisi “Bullet Points”, “The Tradition”, dan “Duplex” sebagai praktik politik estetika. Dengan menggunakan teori politik estetika Jacques Rancière, khususnya konsep distribution of the sensible, dissensus, dan subjektivasi, serta teori kekerasan Johan Galtung, (langsung, struktural, kultural), penelitian ini menganalisis bagaimana elemen-elemen formal puisi menjadi arena perlawanan. Metode yang digunakan adalah kualitatif deskriptif dengan pendekatan analisis tekstual. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa strategi puitik Brown secara aktif membongkar tatanan inderawi yang mapan. Pertama, repetisi dan polifoni dalam “Bullet Points” dianalisis sebagai penciptaan dissensus yang mengganggu narasi media dominan tentang kekerasan polisi. Kedua, ambiguitas liris dalam “The Tradition” berfungsi membongkar distribution of the sensible yang menormalkan kekerasan rasial dan domestik. Ketiga, inovasi bentuk duplex dipahami sebagai praktik subjektivasi politik, yang menawarkan bentuk baru bagi subjek untuk hadir dan berketahanan melalui trauma. Penelitian ini menyimpulkan bahwa politik dalam puisi Brown tidak terletak pada konten representasional semata, melainkan pada bagaimana strategi estetika yang secara aktif menginterupsi, menata ulang, dan menciptakan kemungkinan-kemungkinan baru bagi pengalaman inderawi dan politik. Puisi Brown adalah kritik yang tidak hanya berbicara tentang kekerasan, tetapi juga bekerja melawan mekanisme yang melanggengkannya.

This study analyzes Jericho Brown’s poems in The Tradition (2019). The study’s assumption is how Brown’s poems function as a form of political intervention against violence in America. This study aims to analyze how the poetic strategies of the poems “Bullet Points,” “The Tradition,” and “Duplex” function as practices of aesthetic politics. Drawing upon Jacques Rancière’s politics of aesthetic theory —specifically the concepts of the distribution of the sensible, dissensus, and subjectivation—as well as Johan Galtung’s theory of violence (direct, structural, and cultural), this study examines how the formal elements of the poetry become an arena of resistance. The methodology employed is descriptive qualitative, utilizing a textual analysis approach. The findings indicate that Brown’s poetic strategies actively dismantle the established sensory order. First, the repetition and polyphony in “Bullet Points” are analyzed as creating dissensus that disrupts the dominant media narrative surrounding police violence. Second, the lyrical ambiguity in “The Tradition” serves to deconstruct the distribution of the sensible that normalizes racial and domestic violence. Third, the formal innovation of the duplex is understood as a practice of political subjectivation, offering a new form for the subject to emerge and practice resilience through trauma. This study concludes that the politics in Brown’s poetry does not lie merely in its representational content, but rather in how its aesthetic strategies actively interrupt, reorganize, and create new possibilities for sensory and political experience. Brown’s poetry is a critique that not only speaks about violence but also works against the mechanisms that perpetuate it.
