Penelitian ini berfokus pada perkembangan kelembagaan, sarana, prasarana, sistem pengelolaan dan sistem pelayanan Perpustakaan Pusat Universitas Gadjah Mada sejak berdirinya hingga kini. Studi ini merupakan kajian sejarah institusi yang menggunakan metode penelitian sejarah dengan sumber primer berupa arsip laporan tahunan universitas, arsip laporan tahunan rektor UGM, arsip laporan tahunan Perpustakaan UGM, arsip laporan pembangunan UGM, arsip pidato-pidato rektor UGM, arsip pengembangan Perpustakaan UGM, arsip koran dan surat kabar, memoar pelaku sejarah, dan sumber lisan. Sumber sekunder meliputi terbitan-terbitan peringatan hari jadi Perpustakaan UGM, buku-buku petunjuk akademik, laporan penelitian terkait Perpustakaan UGM dan buku-buku referensi lainnya. Temuan penelitian menunjukkan bahwa sejak berdirinya pada tahun 1951, dinamika perkembangan Perpustakaan UGM selalu berjalan seiring dengan terdapatnya penyesuaian peran, sistem, dan penyediaan fasilitas untuk menunjang sivitas Universitas Gadjah Mada. Berawal dari lembaga sederhana yang dibentuk untuk memenuhi kebutuhan dasar sumber pengajaran dan pembelajaran, perpustakaan UGM berkembang melalui serangkaian tahapan penting seperti pemindahan gedung layanan, modernisasi pengelolaan, perubahan fungsi Tri Dharma, perluasan layanan bagi akademisi tingkat lanjut, hingga penerapan teknologi informasi dan digitalisasi yang semakin intensif sejak tahun 1980-an. Setiap perubahan kepemimpinan, kebijakan universitas, maupun tantangan-tantangan zaman yang muncul pada setiap periode turut membentuk arah perkembangan perpustakaan, termasuk pemberlakuan sentralisasi, penerapan sistem otomasi, dan pergeseran paradigma pelayanan dari fungsi perpustakaan secara konvensional, menjadi lembaga penyedia layanan informasi dan ruang pembelajaran yang modern dan kolaboratif bagi penggunanya.

This study focuses on the history of institutional, facilities, management system, and library services system of Central Library of Universitas Gadjah Mada since the estabilishment era until current era. It adopts an institutional history approach, employing historical research methods with primary sources such as annual report of university archives, annual report of the university rector archives, annual report of Central Library of UGM archives, development of university report archives, speech of university president archives, central library of UGM development archives, newspapers archives, subject of history memos, and oral sources. Secondary sources include Central Library anniversary Internal publications, academic instruction books, scholarly works, books, and articles relevant to the topic of Central Library of UGM. The findings reveal that since its establishment era of 1951, the dynamic of central library development is highly influenced by the main role library, systems, and supporting facilities changes as an adaptation in fullfiling the needs of its user. Starting as a traditional library institution which was estabilished to fullfil the basic need of academic resouces, it was thriving with numbers of important stages of development such as library services building relocation, modernisation of management system, the implemention of Tri-Dharma function changes, Library services expansion of higher academic community, and technological development of library information services and management which was intensively advancing since the era of 1980s. Each leadership and policies of university changes, and challenges posed by the era shaped the major directions of library development, this included the important events such as the centralisation, library automation, and the shifts of framework from the conventional library services to a modern and collaborative information and spaces provider for its user.
