Uji keterbacaan huruf-huruf Braille hasil Embossment pada Printer LX-800 dengan memanfaatkan Microsoft Word sebagai editor

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk 1) mendapatkan editor braille dengan memanfaatkan word processing, Microsoft Word 2000; 2) mendapatkan embosser braille alternatif yang murah dan portable dengan memodifikasi hardware printer LX-800; serta 3) menguji keterbacaan huruf braille dari editor Microsoft Word setelah dicetak dengan printer LX-800 yang dimodifikasi menjadi embosser braille. Materi penelitian adalah huruf/abjad, angka, tanda baca, simbol matematika sederhana dan kalimat sederhana dalam Bahasa Indonesia yang telah dicetak dengan printer LX-800 sebagai embosser dengan pengolah kata Microsoft Word 2000 sebagai editor braille. Pengumpulan data dilakukan dengan cara mengamati tampilan huruf braille dan menguji keterbacaan huruf abjad, angka dan tanda baca braille pada penyandang tunanetra dan selanjutnya mencocokkan dengan kode braille Bahasa Indonesia, dan menguji keterbacaan kalimat Bahasa Indonesia dalam huruf braille, selanjutnya membuat tabulasi keterbacaan huruf Braille. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa Microsoft Word dapat digunakan sebagai editor Braille dengan memanfaatkan program aplikasi Visual Basic for Aplication (VBA) yang menempel (embedding) pada aplikasi Microsoft Word. Pemrograman VBA dilakukan dengan cara merekam makro beberapa langkah editing pada aplikasi Microsoft Word, langkah-langkah editing yang direkam adalah langkah FindRreplace, Format Font, dan cetak. Huruf braille diperoleh dengan instalasi font braille pada aplikasi Microsoft word. Selain proses perekaman makro juga dilaksanakan editing kode program hasil perekaman. Sedangkan printer LX-800 dapat digunakan sebagai embosser Braille dengan memodifikasi arah cetak printer dan menambahkan lapisan bahan vinyil pada platen printer. Hasil pengujian tampilan di monitor menunjukkan bahwa konversi tulisan latin ke tulisan Braille sesuai dengan pedoman penulisan Braille Bahasa Indonesia dan hasil uji keterbacaan huruf Braille pada penyandang tunanetra menunjukan hasil bahwa format huruf Braille yang dapat terbaca adalah dengan ukuran huruf (font size) = 28 point, font style = Bold, Spasi antar baris (Line Spacing) = Double, dan Spasi antar huruf (Character Spacing) = expanded 4 ppt. Sedangkan kertas yang dapat digunakan adalah kertas Padalarang warna putih. Akhirnya dapat disimpulkan bahwa Microsoft Word dapat digunakan sebagai editor Braille dengan perangkat cetak printer LX-800 sebagai embosser.

This research is aimed at (1) getting Braille editor by employing word processor, Microsoft word 2000, (2) getting an alternative of cheap and portable braille embosser by modifyng hardware printer LX-800, and (3) testing the legibility of Braille letters of the Microsoft word editor after being printed by using printer LX-800 modified to be Braille embosser. The research items are letters, numbers, punctuation marks, simple mathematical symbols and simple Indonesian sentences which have been printed by using printer LX-800 as the embosser with word processing of Microcoft Word 2000 as the braille editor. The data collection is conducted by observing the appearance of the Braille letters and by testing the legibility of the braille letters, numbers and punctuation marks in the blind people and then matching them with the Indonesian Braille code, and testing the legibility of the Indonesian sentences using the braille letters afterwards. Finally, the legibility tabulation of the braille letters is made. The research results show that Microsoft word can be used as Braille editor by employing the application program of Visual Basic for application (VBA) embedded in the application of Microsoft word. VBA programming is done by macro recording some editing steps in the application of Microsoft word. The editing steps recorded are the steps of FindReplace, Format Font and Print. The braille letters are obtained by installing the braille font in the aplication of Microsoft Word. Besides the process of macro recording, the editing of the program code of the recording result is also conducted. Meanwhile, printer LX 800 can be used as braille embosser by modifying the the direction of the print printer and adding it with vinyil coat on the platen printer. The result of testing the appearance on the monitor show that the conversion of the latin letters to the Braille ones is in line with the guidelines of writing Indonesian Braille. Moreover, the result of testing the legibility of braille letters in the blind people show that the format of the legible Braille letters is the font size = 28 point, font style = Bold, line spacing = double, and character spacing = expanded 4 ppt. The paper that can be used is white Padalarang paper. In conclusion, Microsoft word can be used as Braille editor with printer LX-800 as the embosser.
