EFFECT OF FRESH PAPAYA LEAVES (Carica papaya) AND WATER HYACINTH (Eichhornia crassipes) SUPPLEMENTATION ON THE GROWTH PERFORMANCE OF HYBRID DUCKS

Penggunaan suplemen pakan alternatif, seperti daun pepaya dan eceng gondok, dieksplorasi untuk meningkatkan efisiensi budidaya bebek. Studi ini bertujuan untuk mengevaluasi efek penambahan 5% berat kering daun pepaya segar atau eceng gondok dalam pakan komersial terhadap konsumsi pakan, pertambahan berat badan, dan Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC) pada bebek hibrida. Eksperimen melibatkan tiga perlakuan: P0 (pakan komersial saja), P1 (pakan komersial + 5% berat kering daun pepaya segar), dan P2 (pakan komersial + 5% berat kering eceng gondok), dengan konsumsi pakan, pertambahan berat badan, dan IOFC diukur hingga bebek mencapai usia 4 minggu. Data diperoleh dan dianalisis menggunakan analisis variasi berdasarkan desain acak lengkap satu arah. Jika terdapat perbedaan yang signifikan, akan dilanjutkan dengan Uji Rentang Ganda Duncan (DMRT). Hasil menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan P1 secara signifikan mengurangi konsumsi pakan komersial sambil mempertahankan pertambahan berat badan yang sebanding dan meningkatkan IOFC dibandingkan dengan P0 dan P2. Sebaliknya, bebek dalam perlakuan P2 hanya mengonsumsi 15–25% dari eceng gondok yang disediakan, sehingga tidak terjadi pengurangan signifikan dalam konsumsi pakan komersial. Kesimpulannya, penambahan 5% berat kering daun pepaya segar merupakan strategi efektif untuk mengurangi biaya pakan dan meningkatkan efisiensi ekonomi dalam budidaya bebek hingga usia 4 minggu, sedangkan eceng gondok menunjukkan potensi terbatas akibat rendahnya palatabilitas. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa perlakuan P1 dapat mengurangi konsumsi pakan komersial tanpa mempengaruhi pertambahan berat badan dibandingkan dengan P0.
The use of alternative feed supplements, such as papaya leaves and water hyacinth, is explored to enhance duck farming efficiency. This study aimed to evaluate the effects of supplementing 5% dry weight of fresh papaya leaves or water hyacinth in commercial feed on feed consumption, body weight gain, and Income Over Feed Cost (IOFC) in hybrid ducks. The experiment involved three treatments: P0 (commercial feed only), P1 (commercial feed + 5% dry weight of fresh papaya leaves), and P2 (commercial feed + 5% dry weight of water hyacinth), with feed intake, weight gain, and IOFC measured until the ducks reached 4 weeks of age. The data were obtained and than analyzed using analysis of variation based on a one-way completely randomized design. If it shows a significant difference, it will be continued with the Duncan’s new Multiple Range Test (DMRT). Results showed that P1 significantly reduced commercial feed consumption while maintaining comparable body weight gain and increasing IOFC compared to P0 and P2. In contrast, ducks in P2 consumed only 15–25% of the provided water hyacinth, resulting in no significant reduction in commercial feed intake. In conclusion, supplementing 5% dry weight of fresh papaya leaves is an effective strategy to reduce feed costs and improve economic efficiency in duck farming up to 4 weeks of age, whereas water hyacinth shows limited potential due to low palatability. The result of this research is treatment P1 can decrease the commercial feed consumption without effecting the body weight gain compared with P0.
