Moral Leadership in a Declining World Order: The Role of Pope Francis in International Politics

Paus Fransiskus terpilih menjadi Paus di tengah merosotnya kepercayaan terhadap Gereja Katolik serta merosotnya tatanan dunia. Sementara secara internal, Fransiskus dihadapkan pada permasalahan mulai dari skandal seks Gereja hingga korupsi di Bank Vatikan, secara eksternal Fransiskus dihadapkan pada serangkaian permasalahan internasional, seperti konflik, kesenjangan ekonomi, degradasi lingkungan, dan lain-lain. Penelitian ini akan memanfaatkan konsep Otoritas Moral Soft Power untuk menganalisis penyebab menurunnya tatanan dunia, serta pengaruh Fransiskus dalam menegaskan perubahan politik internasional pada periode tersebut. Dengan menggunakan metode kualitatif, penelitian ini menemukan bahwa tidak adanya Otoritas Moral di kalangan pemimpin negara-negara besar menyebabkan merosotnya tatanan dunia. Di sisi lain, pemanfaatan Otoritas Moral oleh Paus Fransiskus telah berpengaruh dalam mengatasi berbagai masalah. Selain itu, penelitian ini bertujuan untuk menunjukkan dengan tepat bagaimana Paus Fransiskus menggunakan Otoritas Moral dalam hubungannya dengan Diplomasi Kepausan Tahta Suci.

Pope Francis was elected as Pontiff amid the degrading trust towards the Catholic Church, as well as the decline of the world order. While internally Francis was faced by problems ranging from the Church's sex scandals to corruption within the Vatican Bank, externally, Francis was left with a series of international problems, such as conflicts, economic inequality, environmental degradation, and others. This research will utilise the concept of Soft Power's Moral Authority to analyse the cause of the declining world order, as well as Francis' influence in asserting changes on international politics during this period. Using the qualitative method, this research finds that the absence of moral authority within the leaders of major powers led to the decline of the world order. On the other hand, Pope Francis's utilisation of moral authority has been influential in addressing the range of problems. Moreover, this research aims to pinpoint how Francis used the Moral Authority in conjunction with the Holy See's Papal Diplomacy.
