Banyudono Subdistrict, situated in Boyolali Regency, Central Java Province, is one of the major rice production areas that plays a crucial role in supporting local and regional food security. However, rapid population growth, infrastructure development, and urbanization have triggered the conversion of rice fields in this area. This condition raises concerns about the sustainability of agricultural land, farmers’ productivity, and the effectiveness of policies aimed at protecting sustainable agricultural land. To address this issue, this final project was conducted to map the land use changes of rice fields in Banyudono Subdistrict from 2017 to 2022. The objective of this project is to provide accurate spatial data to support the implementation of the Sustainable Agricultural Land Protection policy.
The land use change maps were produced through spatial analysis using Remote Sensing and Geographic Information systems (GIS) techniques. The primary data used were Very High-Resolution Satellite Imagery (VHR), namely Pleiades satellite images from 2017 and 2022, with a spatial resolution of 0.5 meters. Prior to use, the imagery underwent pansharpening, geometric correction, and clipping according to the study area boundary using Erdas Imagine 2015 and QGIS. The processed imagery was then used as the basis for visual interpretation in on-screen digitization with ArcMap software. The digitization process generated vector-based land cover data for the years 2017 and 2022. The 2017 land cover was classified into two classes, namely paddy fields and non-paddy fields, while the 2022 classification consisted of eleven classes referring to the Indonesian National Standard (SNI) 7645:2010. The vector data were then rasterized and overlaid using the Raster Calculator tool in QGIS software, resulting in a new raster dataset representing areas of paddy field conversion in Banyudono District, Boyolali Regency.
The accuracy of the land cover classification results was assessed using reference data from imagery in Google Earth Pro software. The accuracy assessment in 2017 achieved an overall accuracy of 94%, while in 2022 it achieved 96%. The overall results of this final project show that paddy field conversion covered an area of 694,16 hectares during the 2017–2022 period. The largest land conversion occurred from paddy fields to other vegetation with an area of 63,85 hectares, followed by conversion to ongoing construction areas with an area of 26,38 hectares, and conversion to settlements with an area of 6,94 hectares.
