Casuarina junghuhniana is a species with potential for use in land rehabilitation activities. Symbiosis with Frankia can fix nitrogen in the air, thereby improving soil quality. To increase the success of rehabilitation, high-quality seedlings are needed, one factor influencing which is the planting medium. This study was conducted to determine the growth of C. junghuhniana seedlings in different growing medium compositions up to three months of age in a nursery.
The design used in this study was RCBD (Randomized Complete Block Design) one factor. The factor used was media composition (Topsoil under C. junghuhniana trees; Open land topsoil; Sand; Mixture of topsoil under C. junghuhniana trees with sand; Mixture of open land topsoil with sand) each treatment combination consisted of 5 individuals. All treatments were repeated in five block. The total number of individuals used was 125. Observations were conducted for three months. Parameters observed were percent survival, height, diameter, root length, root nodules, root order, and biomass. The observation results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA).
Medium composition treatment had a significant effect on plant height, diameter, and number of orders of third roots. A mixture of open field topsoil with sand produced the best growth height, root nodule count, and total biomass. Adding sand to topsoil improved physical properties by enhancing aeration and drainage, thereby supporting seedling growth and root nodule formation. Open field topsoil medium produced a more optimal number of root orders for C. junghuhniana seedlings compared to other media.
