Penelitian ini membahas representasi etika terhadap hewan dalam novel La gue?rilla des animaux karya Camille Brunel dan kaitannya dengan kampanye perlindungan hewan yang dilakukan tokoh utamanya, Isaac Obermann. Penelitian ini diawali dengan menganalisis representasi etika terhadap hewan yang disajikan novel melalui tokoh Isaac dan aktivis hewan lain yang ia jumpai sepanjang perjalanannya keliling dunia. Pada bagian pertama, analisis dilakukan dengan menggunakan teori etika terhadap hewan dari Peter Singer, Mary Midgley, dan Tom Regan. Bagian ini menemukan bahwa novel justru mengkritik pendekatan kekerasan ekstrem yang diterapkan Isaac dalam aksi perlindungan hewannya. Novel ini memiliki perspektif etika terhadap hewan yang lebih dekat dengan pemikiran Tom Regan. Perspektif tersebut memandang bahwa kekerasan untuk melindungi hewan hanya boleh dilakukan setelah upaya non-kekerasan telah dicoba dan gagal, dengan syarat kekerasan tersebut bukan kekerasan ekstrem. Pada bagian selanjutnya, penelitian ini menganalisis representasi etika terhadap hewan tersebut menggunakan teori ekokritik pascakolonial untuk menemukan sejauh apa relevansi etika terhadap hewan yang diyakini Isaac—yang adalah orang Barat—dengan kondisi sosial yang beragam di negara-negara non-Barat yang dikunjungi Isaac. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa novel ini cenderung menampilkan etika terhadap hewan yang berlaku di negara-negara non-Barat secara eksotis dan simplistik. Masyarakat non-Barat yang mempunyai konsep etika terhadap hewan berbeda cenderung digambarkan negatif sebagai pelaku utama kejahatan terhadap hewan. Novel ini juga mengabaikan beragam konteks sosial dan sejarah yang menyebabkan hadirnya konsep etika terhadap hewan yang berbeda. Hal ini dipengaruhi oleh stereotip dan bias terhadap kelompok masyarakat non-Barat yang dipengaruhi oleh wacana kolonial dan gagasan white savior atau penyelamat putih. 

This research discusses the representation of animal ethics in Camille Brunel's novel La gue?rilla des animaux and its correlation to the animal protection campaign carried out by the main character, Isaac Obermann. The research begins by analyzing the representation of animal ethics presented in the novel through Isaac and other animal activists he encounters throughout his travels around the world. In the first part, the analysis utilizes animal ethics theories proposed by Peter Singer, Mary Midgley, and Tom Regan. This section finds that the novel is rather critical of the extreme violent approach adopted by Isaac in his animal protection campaign. This novel adopts animal ethics that aligns more with Tom Regan's theory. This theory holds that violence to protect animals should only be used after non-violent efforts have been tried and failed, provided that the violence is not extreme. In the next section, this study analyzes the representation of animal ethics using postcolonial ecocriticism theory to determine the extent to which Isaac's belief in animal ethics—as a Westerner—is relevant to the diverse social conditions in the non-Western countries he visited. The results of the study show that the novel tends to portray the animal ethics prevalent in non-Western countries in an exotic and simplistic manner. Non-Western societies that have different concepts of animal ethics tend to be portrayed negatively as the main perpetrators of crimes against animals. The novel also ignores the diverse social and historical contexts that give rise to different concepts of animal ethics. This is influenced by stereotypes and biases against non-Western societies that are influenced by colonial discourse and the idea of the white savior.
