Individuality Principle in Lily Briscoe: An Adlerian Approach of Virginia Woolf's To the Lighthouse

Karya tugas akhir ini mengkaji konstruksi prinsip individu dalam novel To the Lighthouse (1927) karya Virginia Woolf melalui pendekatan teori psikologi individu dari Alfred Adler. Kerangka teori Adler menitikberatkan dua aspek penting dari individualitas: perasaan inferior dan keinginan untuk meraih superioritas. Dengan menerapkan kerangka teoritis ini, penelitian ini menyelidiki bagaimana aspek-aspek tersebut membentuk karakter Lily Briscoe dan perjalanan artistiknya. Pendekatan penelitian ini bersifat kualitatif, melalui pembacaan mendalam dan kategorisasi bagian dialog serta narasi dari novel. Data utama yang dianalisis bertujuan mengungkap proses pembentukan dan perkembangan identitas diri Lily dalam kaitannya dengan konsep-konsep Adler. Data tersebut kemudian diinterpretasi secara sistematis guna mengungkap dinamika dasar dari individualitas khas milik Lily Briscoe.

Temuan pada penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa pada bagian awal cerita, motivasi Lily sebagian besar didorong oleh finalisme fiktif untuk menyelesaikan lukisannya. Finalisme ini terbentuk sebagai respons terhadap perasaan inferior yang dirasakannya, yang berasal dari berbagai faktor, termasuk pengaruh internal, eksternal, dan demografis. Ia menggunakan perasaan inferior sebagai motivasi dalam usahanya untuk meraih superioritas. Ketika dia menghadapi berbagai tantangan dalam usahanya, dia menggunakan konsep daya kreatif untuk menemukan pendekatan unik dalam mencapai tujuannya. Pada akhir cerita, Lily mencapai perasaan mawas diri, yang digambarkan dengan penyelesaian realitas subjektif dan lukisan fisiknya.

This undergraduate thesis explores the construction of the individuality principle in Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse (1927) through the lens of Alfred Adler’s theory of individual psychology. Adler’s framework emphasises two crucial aspects of individuality: inferiority and striving for superiority. By applying this theoretical approach, the study examines how these aspects shape Lily Briscoe's character and her artistic development. The research employs a qualitative method, comprising close reading and categorisation of dialogues and narrative sections from the novel. The primary data are analysed to unveil how Lily’s sense of self is constructed and evolved in relation to Adlerian concepts. These data are then systematically interpreted to reveal the underlying dynamics of her perceived individuality.

The findings of this research indicate that, in the early sections of the novel, Lily’s motivations are predominantly driven by her fictional finalism to finish her painting. This finalism is formed as a response to her perceived feeling of inferiority, which stems from various factors, including internal, external, and demographic influences. She uses her inferior feeling as a motivation in her striving for superiority. As she faces different challenges in her striving, she employs the concept of creative power to find her unique approach to accomplishing her goals. By the end of the story, Lily achieves a sense of self-acceptance, portrayed by the completion of her subjective reality and physical painting.
