This research investigates the phenomenon
of Vocaloid technology, a voice synthesis software designed to realistically
imitate the human voice (mimesis).
However, In its development, the resulting sound is characteristically
"robotic" and rigid when compared to human vocals. Rather than being
perceived as a failure, this artificial quality has been celebrated as a new
aesthetic by its user community. This phenomenon has ultimately given rise to a
vast, decentralized, and anti-hierarchical cultural ecosystem.
Employing the conceptual framework from
the philosophy of Gilles Deleuze and Félix Guattari, this study utilizes the
concept of the rhizome as a non-hierarchical model of thought that rejects the
centralized, arborescent structures of Western tradition. Furthermore,
Deleuze's concept of the simulacrum, a
copy without an original model, is used to analyze the ontological status of
the Vocaloid voice, which transcends the conventional logic of original and
copy. This entire framework is predicated on the rejection of transcendent
hierarchies and an affirmation of the plane of immanence, which posits that the
ontological status of all entities exists on a single, equivalent plane.
The analysis reveals that the Vocaloid
voice is not a failed imitation but rather a simulacrum that successfully asserts its existence through
difference. Moreover, the Vocaloid creative ecosystem operates as a rhizome: a
decentralized network that connects producers, works, and audiences
non-hierarchically, thereby blurring the traditional roles of creator and
consumer. Thus, it is concluded that Vocaloid manifests a collective,
distributed, and decentralized model of cultural production.
