Hustle Culture among Undergraduate Students with Friendship Groups at Universitas Gadjah Mada

Hustle culture semakin umum di kalangan mahasiswa, namun penelitian mengenai pengalaman ini masih terbatas. Penelititan ini bertujuan untuk memahami bagaimana mahasiswa memaknai hustle culture dan bagaimana kelompok pertemanan berkontribusi dalam pemaknaan tersebut. Pendekatan kualitatif deskriptif digunakan melalui wawancara semi-terstruktur dengan lima mahasiswi dari Fakultas Psikologi Universitas Gadjah Mada. Analisis tematik menunjukkan bahwa mahasiswa memandang hustle culture sebagai sarana pengembangan diri yang didorong oleh motivasi intrinsik serta dipengaruhi oleh norma sosial yang berlaku. Meski mendapatkan manfaat, mahasiswa juga menghadapi risikonya, seperti burnout dan terbatasnya waktu pribadi. Kelompok pertemanan memiliki peran penting dalam mempertahankan keterlibatan mahasiswa melalui dukungan emosional, saran praktis, dan pemahaman bersama. Dinamika ini membantu memperkuat ketahanan diri dan keterampilan sosial mahasiswa dalam menghadapi berbagai tanggung jawab. Studi ini menekankan pentingnya pendekatan yang seimbang terhadap hustle culture serta peran kelompok pertemanan sebagai sumber dukungan utama bagi kesejahteraan mahasiswa dan keterlibatan mereka yang bekerlanjutan.
Hustle culture is increasingly common among undergraduate students, yet limited research explores this experience. This study aimed to explore how undergraduate students interpret hustle culture and how friendship groups contribute to that meaning. A qualitative descriptive approach was employed through semi-structured interviews with five female psychology undergraduate students at Universitas Gadjah Mada. Thematic analysis revealed that students perceive hustle culture as a path to self-development, often driven by intrinsic motivation that is also influenced by prevailing social norms. While students benefit from hustle culture, they also face risks such as burnout and reduced personal time. Friendship groups play a vital role in sustaining their involvement by providing emotional support, practical advice, and shared understanding. These dynamics nurture resilience and social skills while students manage multiple responsibilities. This study emphasizes the importance of a balanced approach to hustle culture and highlights friendship groups as key support systems for student well-being and their sustained involvement.
