A DISCOURSE HISTORICAL APPROACH OF GENOCIDE IN THE PALESTINE-ISRAEL CONFLICT ON THE JAKARTA POST

Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mengetahui representasi genosida dan penggunaan istilah genosida dalam konflik Palestina-Israel di The Jakarta Post serta konteks historis yang melatarbelakangi penggunaan istilah tersebut di The Jakarta Post. Data penelitian ini berupa kata, frasa, klausa atau kalimat dalam artikel berita yang berkaitan dengan isu genosida di The Jakarta Post. Data diambil dari sepuluh artikel berita terpilih di media The Jakarta Post (https://www.thejakartapost.com) dari tanggal 7 Oktober 2023 hingga 31 Januari 2024. Untuk menganalisis data, penelitian ini menggunakan teori pendekatan wacana historis oleh Ruth Wodak tahun 2001, khususnya pada kategori pemilihan tema dan topik, strategi diskursif (nominasi, predikasi, argumentasi (topos kerugian, topos keadilan, topos kemanusiaan, dan topos ancaman), perspektif, dan intensifikasi/mitigasi.

Penelitian ini menemukan bahwa The Jakarta Post merepresentasikan isu genosida dalam konflik Palestina-Israel dengan hati-hati namun tegas. The Jakarta Post tidak menyatakan bahwa Israel melakukan genosida secara langsung, tetapi menyatakan bahwa genosida adalah aksi yang sangat kejam dan tidak dapat diterima. Selain itu, The Jakarta Post menggunakan istilah ‘genosida’ secara tidak langsung, dengan menggunakan kutipan dari pengadilan tertinggi, kutipan dari perwakilan negara yang berkonflik, dan dokumen hukum. Selain itu, The Jakarta Post juga menggunakan istilah ‘genosida’ secara implisit dengan memberikan konotasi genosida. Disamping itu, tiga referensi histori memiliki konteks histori berbeda yang mendasari penggunaan istilah genosida di The Jakarta Post.

This thesis aims to identify the representation of genocide and the use of the term genocide in the Palestine-Israel conflict in The Jakarta Post and the historical contexts underlying the use of the term in The Jakarta Post. The data for this research consists of words, phrases, clauses or sentences in news articles related to genocide issues on The Jakarta Post. The data were taken from ten selected news articles on The Jakarta Post media (https://www.thejakartapost.com) from October 7th, 2023, to January 31st, 2024. In analyzing the data, this research used the theory of the Discourse Historical Approach by Ruth Wodak in 2001, primarily for categories of theme and topic choice, discursive strategies (nomination, predication, argumentation (topos of disadvantage, topos of justice, topos of humanitarianism, and topos of threat), perspectivation/framing and intensification/mitigation.

This research found that The Jakarta Post represented the genocide in the Palestine-Israel conflict carefully but firmly. The Jakarta Post did not state that Israel conducted genocide directly, but it stated that genocide is an extensive crime and unacceptable. Moreover, The Jakarta Post used the term indirectly through quotations from courts, officials, and legal documents. Further, The Jakarta Post also used the term ‘genocide’ implicitly by providing the genocide connotation. Besides, three historical references have different historical contexts that underlie the use of the term ‘genocide’ in The Jakarta Post.
