THE SURVIVAL STRATEGY IN DEVELOPING PENCAK SILAT IN THE UNITED STATES

Pencak Silat is one of Asian martial arts, which has been recognized by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as Indonesian intangible heritage. Pencak Silat as a body of Indonesia, it has its uniqueness and connection with Indonesia history. The significance characteristics of Pencak Silat which have spiritual mental aspects, self-defense aspects, art aspects, and sport aspects that make Pencak Silat different with the other martial arts. The expansions of Pencak Silat rapidly happened not only in the Asian countries, Middle East countries, European countries, but also in the American countries. In this research, it scoped to investigated the expansion of Pencak Silat in the United States of America. Seen from two Pencak Silat school in the United Stated of America. The differences of culture, language, society, and environment of those nation and schools have shaped the struggles, challenges and strategies to develop Pencak Silat.
This study examines the strategies employed by American practitioners as agents of cultural capital in developing Pencak Silat in the United States. It also explores the influence of American culture on this transnational martial art. The analysis applies Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of strategy through the lenses of cultural, social, symbolic, and economic capital in both schools. The research employs a qualitative method, use the live interviews with the resource persons Abdul Malik Ahmad as the founder of Silat Institute and Marcus Kim as the head instructors of Inti Ombak Pencak Silat in Middlebury, serve as primary data for the research. Moreover, the research is also used the articles, journals and the official websites of those two schools to validated the research as the empiric research.
Through the analysis, the finding reveals that those two schools have different strategies seen from the power of symbolic capital or the figure that shaped the Pencak Silat school in the United States of America, the knowledge, the networking and the way of the school gaining the independent financial support. Although, both face similar challenges such as limited instructors. Moreover, because it is developed by the American it has a significant influence in the learning process such as from the delivery of language, the use of various technology and media to make Pencak Silat popular. But then, it is not changed or influenced the sacred and the body of Pencak Silat itself as the original culture of Indonesia.
