The waste management problem in Kabupaten Sukoharjo is becoming increasingly complex due to population growth and the limited capacity of the Mojorejo landfill, which is nearly full. This situation raises the potential for environmental pollution and social conflict if not addressed promptly. Therefore, a land suitability assessment is needed to help determine a new landfill location accurately and sustainably. This study aims to analyze land suitability for landfill site selection in Kabupaten Sukoharjo by comparing two multi-criteria decision-making methods: the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and the Fuzzy Analytic Hierarchy Process (FAHP). The land suitability analysis was conducted with the support of Geographic Information Systems (GIS).
The analysis is based on the technical criteria established in SNI 03-3241-1994 concerning procedures for selecting landfill locations, along with additional references from scientific literature. The study applies two main criteria and 14 sub-criteria encompassing environmental, social, and economic aspects. Weight determination was carried out through expert interviews and processed using Microsoft Excel, while spatial modeling was conducted using QGIS. AHP was used to compare criteria deterministically through pairwise comparisons, while FAHP employed fuzzy logic to accommodate uncertainty in expert judgment. The outputs from both methods were used to generate land suitability maps classified into four levels: suitable, moderately suitable, unsuitable, and highly unsuitable.
The results of the study indicate that the highest weight of importance lies in the environmental criteria, with land use being the dominant sub-criterion. In the socio-economic aspect, the distance to settlements holds the greatest weight. Spatially, the most suitable location for the construction of a landfill is in Kecamatan Bulu, which meets most of the environmental and socio-economic criteria, as well as the minimum area requirement. The AHP method produced a suitable land area of 71.382 hectares, while the FAHP method resulted in 70.932 hectares. FAHP yielded a wider coverage in the moderately suitable and highly unsuitable categories due to its greater sensitivity to data ambiguity. Nevertheless, both methods produced relatively similar results for the highest suitability level. Overall, FAHP is considered more adaptive in representing actual field conditions, and therefore is more recommended for use in landfill site suitability analysis in regions with complex and uncertain spatial characteristics.
