Kritik Komunitarianisme Michael Sandel terhadap Liberalisme-Individual John Stuart Mill

Penelitian ini mengeksplorasi gagasan komunitarianisme Michael Sandel dalam mengkritisi liberalisme-individual Mill. Fokus utama penelitian adalah analisis atas pandangan Mill mengenai kebebasan individu, serta bagaimana Sandel menilai keterbatasan pandangan tersebut dari sudut pandang komunitarianisme.

Jenis penelitian ini merupakan penelitian kualitatif dengan menggunakan metode studi kepustakaan mengenai pemikiran liberalisme-individual Mill dan komunitarianisme Michael Sandel. Peneliti menggunakan model reflektif dalam mengkaji objek formal dan objek material penelitian. Adapun unsur-unsur metodis yang digunakan dalam penelitian, yaitu: deskripsi, interpretasi dan refleksi kritis.

Penelitian ini menghasilkan kesimpulan bahwa liberalisme-individual Mill memberikan pandangan mengenai konsep diri, relasi individu dengan sosial yang menjadi kritik utama dalam kacamata komunitarianisme. Sandel mengkritik mengenai pemikiran individualistik Mill dalam memandang relasi individu dengan komunitas dengan konsep “unencumbered self”. kritik komunitarianisme Sandel membuka ruang bagi pemikiran etika dan politik yang lebih berakar pada nilai kebaikan bersama.

This study explores Michael Sandel's communitarianism as a critique of John Stuart Mill's individualistic liberalism. The main focus of this research is the analysis of Mill's view on individual freedom and how Sandel assesses the limitations of this perspective from the standpoint of communitarianism.

This research is a qualitative study using a literature review method on Mill’s individualist-liberal philosophy and Sandel’s communitarian thought. The researcher employs a reflective model to examine both the formal and material objects of the study. The methodological elements used include description, interpretation, and critical reflection.

The study concludes that Mill’s individualistic liberalism presents a view of the self and the individual's relationship with society, which becomes the main point of critique from a communitarian perspective. Sandel criticizes Mill's individualistic conception of the self—particularly in relation to the community—through the notion of the “unencumbered self.” His communitarian critique opens the way for ethical and political thought that is more deeply rooted in shared notions of the common good.
